Interesting comment from Zuckerman on today's Nats Chat. He called Adams the superior defensive catcher over Millas while saying Millas had the better overall bat which is why Millas DH'd and Adams caught.

I was always under the impression that Millas was considered the best defensively between him, Adams, and Ruiz.

It does make me wonder if his opinion is shared by the organization.

Saw a report that Ruiz is practice at 1st base. He's a -1.1 WAR player this year. Why on earth would we want him at 1st?

because the subtle message was sent to him that he's not coming back as the primary catcher

Oh, why would we even bother with that instead of cutting him? i don't care as long as it's not a automatic he gets MLB playing time there.

I wonder if he's had multiple concussions and catching would be bad for his health. I don't remember him getting hit on backswings before, and I don't think he's been exposed to the old sort of blow up the catcher kind of contact.

Hopefully to enhance his trade value...he isn't worth crap behind the plate...

Because ownership refuses to DFA him.

I think they're trying him at first to avoid giving him another concussion this season.

Im okay with DFAing him, but I'd also like to see what he does with a different coaching approach. There's too much talent and 2023 was too good to just give up on. Not when there isn't anything better and ownership isn't welling to spenx

I need to review my post history. I held Riley Adams stock for years, I don’t think I publicly sold it this season. At least I hope I didn’t.

He’s reminding me why I always thought he deserved two weeks at first base….

I wouldn't mind seeing him work at 1B or DH against LHP

Ruiz 1st went on the IL on 6/24, came back for 2 games on 7/4 & 7/5, then back to il.

Right, nothing to do with June 10, so not understanding why the 10th was chosen.

I think he had 2 3-hit games between the 10th and 24th

They weren't really really hits, more like gentle taps.  His spray chart looks like he's playing wiffle ball.  Not much happening within 100 feet of the fence.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-nationals-are-a-catching-catastrophe/

This was posted to FG on 6/20. Keibert's last game before the IL was on 6/23. At that time, the catchers (ruiz/Adamss) had piled up -1.7 fWAR, putting them on a historically bad pace. Since 6/24 (which includes the 2 Keibert starts on 7/4 & 5 when he went back onto the IL), the Adams / Millas duo has 1.2fWAR, good for 9th in baseball.

Was there ever a year Martinez didn’t ride Ruiz into the ground? I wonder if his value can be saved a bit just managing his workload some

Two rehab starts so far at Harrisburg: 0-5, 4Ks, 3BBs

What's left of the fan base is going to riot if he comes back and displaces Adams but I suspect with the Alfaro signing they aren't planning on bringing Ruiz back this year.

true under the old regime. Ruiz is the ultimate test of whether or not it's business as usual or if there is real change in approach.
