that's the multi-million dollar question. The track record isn't good, but Bryce Young was pretty freaking amazing playing in the toughest conference in the NFL and setting school records for passing yards and TDs.

Worth a read: https://www.theringer.com/nfl-draft/2023/3/3/23623742/bryce-young-height-short-nfl-combine-outlier

The red dot below is Bryce Young.  Best case scenario is that he's Drew Brees, but Brees was one in a thousand.

(Image removed from quote.)

Drew Brees played 15 pounds heavier than young. Young was also behind the Alabama line throwing to Alabama receivers. He's not going to have that talent advantage any more. I think if he can stay healthy, he'll be good but that's a huge caveat.

the article noted that Young's OL wasn't all that great nor were his receiving corps.  It's a huge risk to take him at #1, but it's not out of the question that he succeeds (and bulks up a bit).

Every player on the Alabama offense was good enough to get offered a scholarship to play at Alabama

Cam Newton was huge and injured all the time. I can see concerns about the height. But Russell Wilson is 5’11”.  Jalen Hurts is 6’1”.  Built like a tank but still hurt his shoulder last year. Kid needs to learn to slide and get out of bounds.

true, but alabama had 3 players picked in the first round this year: QB, RB, OLB.  No receivers or OL.  They had two receivers and an OT taken last year.

i'm not saying they weren't good, they just weren't as good as in years past.  See below:

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/first-and-10-alabama-fans-heres-the-brutal-truth-this-tide-team-has-serious-issues/

Quote
In Saban’s 15 seasons prior to 2022, he has had 19 offensive linemen drafted — including 9 in the first round and 14 in the first 3 rounds.
In those same 15 seasons, Alabama has had 11 wide receivers drafted, including 8 in the first round and 10 in the first 3 rounds.

It’s not a stretch to say offensive line and wide receiver have been the foundational core of the Alabama offense under Saban. Quarterbacks come and go — game managers and stars who have won national titles — but the offense has gone from a successful complement to the defense to the reason Alabama wins games.

Until now.

We should’ve seen this coming last season, when the offensive line gave up 40 — 40! — sacks and led the SEC by giving up more than 100 tackles for loss. But because quarterback Bryce Young was so masterful, and because no one could cover wideout Jameson Williams (more on him later), the problems flew under the radar.

So, too, did the problems at wide receiver. Had Saban not landed Williams from the transfer portal prior to the 2021 season, and had Williams not developed into the most dangerous player in the game, the problems at wide receiver that are glaringly evident now would’ve shown last season.

The sack rate did improve, he was 'only' sacked 18 times in 2022-23 in 12 games. Alabama ranked 30th in rushing in 2022-23

The running back was a real head scratcher.

Eagles trade up to draft another Georgia defensive player. Also trade with the Lions for a RB. Howie is killing it.

Who gives a damn if they traded for another thUGA player?   Their players are 80 percent busts in the NFL

pretty cool story about Colby Sorsdal out of W&M who the Lions drafted in the fifth round. He chose last year to return to W&M for his final year of eligibility rather than transfer to a Power-5 conference: https://sports.yahoo.com/the-story-of-a-transfer-portal-era-unicorn-131811722.html

Great line, from Mahomes, on starters attitude to preseason...'he (Coach Reid) said he wouldn't let us come off until we scored...'  ;)
