Crosby and Nash worked with Gilmour on Gilmour's "On an Island" solo album and toured with him afterwards. Here's them doing Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

My first thought of Bando was not of the As world series but rather the breakup of the team in 1976. He wasn't involved in the deals when Finley sold Rudi and Fingers for $1 million each and Vida Blue for %1.5, butFinley was absolutely right that he needed to cash out those guys with them, Bando, Tenace, and Campenaris unsigned after 1976. They had already dealt Jackson and Holtzman to Baltimore before the season. In the end,  the As lost all of them to free agency with no compensation,  killing the club. That $3.5million could have paid for talent.

Gary Oelze, who helped transform the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria - once a quiet neighborhood venue for folk and bluegrass musicians - into a major stop for world-renowned acts including soul and country performers, died Jan 23 at his home in Alexandria.  He was 80.

I'd heard he was in poor health, he even missed one of our last shows.  He typically would hang out near the bar with the crowd before being seated inside the Listening Room, and would check tickets himself at the entrance as numbers were called.  Quite personable, happy to share a story or chat.  He wrote a book last year about the Birchmere, which I bought.  Amazing history, walk down the halls and view the hundreds of autographed photos from artists, many who played there before making it really big, some who played there despite being big already.  Anyway, he will be missed and  the club continues more or less like it is now.  We typically go to 6-8 shows a year there and it would be awful for us to lose that experience.   (we currently have tickets for 2 upcoming shows, Lyle Lovett and Richard Thompson)

Damn. I was just watching the 1974 film The Conversation last night, in which she plays a prominent character.

you should watch American Graffiti if you haven't seen it. Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard are the leads, but it was a breakthrough role for Harrison Ford as the racer / hot rod driving guy (probably the inspiration for Matthew McCaughnehey in Dazed and Confused). Cindy Williams had a big role too. A lot of people who became cultural icons and actors in the 70s got exposure there (Suzanne Somers has a key role). Coppola produced, Lucas directed.

Yep, fantastic movie. It's been years since I've seen it all the way through.

Billy Packer. Long time color announcer on national college basketball and ACC games.

Nice article about him in the Post.  In the article, Lefty Driesell is quoted as calling Packer the best college basketball analyst ever on TV.  As a fan of several ACC teams back in the day, I really enjoyed his analysis and commentary.  There''s a good story about him and the George Mason coach the year they went to the Final Four.

Burt Bacharach at 94. Many of us may know him best as one of the composers of the song "Baby It's You," covered by the Beatles on their first album, Please Please Me.

Rain Drops Are Falling on My Head from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  Also I think "Do You Know the Way to San Jose."  Now to the google to verify!

edit - Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head is written by Bacharach and Hal David for the movie.

Do You Know the Way to San Jose was written by Bacharach with lyrics by Hal David.

Bacharach was prolific.

Bacharach put out a fantastic album with Elvis Costello nearly 25 years ago too.
