I’m up north since yesterday but ok central Florida has been no rain for several weeks. Hotter than normal and dry. One night late we had a big downpour.  That’s about it. Think the coasts have been in the same weather pattern which is great for baseball. The hot and dry weather will soon be followed by even hotter and wet.

Flew into DCA yesterday and the pilot had a dickens of a time landing. Plane bounced and must have been near end of runway and he put on the brakes hard.
DCA has always scared the bejeezuz out of me. I like those long, wide runways at Dulles.

The River approach is no fun.

Pah, that's the long runway! You haven't lived in DC unless you've landed on one of the other two.

Crazy winds the last few days. I’ve landed into dca from the north in bad weather before. It’s….interesting.

We were in Vero Beach and Disney during the last week of Feb/first week of March and not a drop of rain the whole time. Hot, too. I guess it's usually dry this time of year but some places looked like they could really use some rain.

We saw a game in Jupiter, one in West Palm, and a Blue Jays-Tigers game in Lakeland. The latter was probably my favorite of the three ballparks. They've really fixed the place up since I was last there maybe five years ago, and the concessions were top notch.

My favorite approach in the country, have so many good pics of DC taken within a minute or two of landing.

I worked on a review of FAS landing systems and we spoke to some pilots. That cannot leave my mind. Who had the idea to put an airport so close to the White House and Capitol?

I went to a minor league game in Lakeland a couple years ago. Was nice but not many concessions open. Could pretty much sit wherever you wanted though. Nice little park.

It's a visual approach and is not used when visibility is under 3 miles and cloud ceilings under 3,500 feet.  Anything below that and you land using the instruments from the south.  The approach starts at 3,000 feet right around the Maryland side of the American Legion Bridge. Wind can be an issue due to the short main runway, which is about the same length as the runways in LaGuardia.

The original airport was near where the Pentagon is now and had a road running through it.  The site next to the river was supposed to be improvement.  For years the Government and then MWAA have tried to get more traffic to Dulles but besides flights requiring widebodies that's been a challenge.

Anyone know what's going on with Hunter Harvey? Has only thrown 2.2 innings this spring.

And DCA has been where it is since WWII, when the size and performance of planes and security sensibilities were such that proximity to the Mall weren't an issue.  A DC-3 on a milk run with 11 stops before Boston is far different than an A321 headed to Phoenix or a 737-200 taking off with ice all over its wings.

I've been told by a consultant who worked with FAA that the safe distance for landing at a US airport was back-calculated from how long the runway is at National.  Probably goes back to 707s.

Ironically, perhaps, 707s couldn't take off or land at DCA except at extremely light weights.  Even today, some aircraft (the 737-900 being the most prominent) don't have the runway performance for some routes, even after the runway's been extended.

AA is flying the A321neos to PHX and LAX and the 757's have been coming and going out of DCA for years.  I fly in and out of Burbank a good amount on 737s, and the main E-W runway is 1300 ft shorter than DCA's 1/19 and is most commonly used for landing.   The longer 15/33 runway at Burbank, which is the same length as DCA's main runway, requires a sharp turn to the right after takeoff to avoid the Hollywood Hills, but keeps things exciting.

I've done Burbank but only on Embraers.

The 757 is a different beast than any of the rest of that, though.  It was designed for field performance.

I'm curious how many pitchers that we project to start or even make the team have appeared vs. the Mets this year.

We all knew Riley Adams had power potential. It didn’t show last year. It is this Spring. Is it time to wonder if he should actually be in Rochester hitting everyday at 1B/DH? Or just be happy to have a backup C who makes pitchers think for a moment?

Adams is your backup this year. He hasn't shown any ability to hit consistently since going above AA.
