Another hit for Elijah Green, this one with the bases loaded drives in a run.

"He looked unbelievable." Keibert Ruiz on Cavalli pre-injury: "That's the best I've seen him."

Interestingly, Jackson Rutledge was optioned to AA right before this happened.  That last starter role could end up going to Espino.

Or Abbott.  The depth chart gets pretty ugly with Adon maybe in the mix as well.

Yikes.  As I've said before, given the injury history and lack of talent difference between much of the bullpen and the rotation, time to look at using openers.

Well this sucks. Drawing a parallel here, maybe Cavalli is our next Strasburg, and he will be ready for 2024 and that year we turn some heads, ala 2012.

Assuming Cavalli will not be on the OD roster, that leaves the following pitchers as likely to break camp:

rotation locks: Corbin, Gray, Gore, Williams
Back end of bullpen: Finnegan, Edwards, Harvey
Middle / Multi innings: Ramirez, Espino
Rule 5: Ward
Likelies: Arano, Thompson

That's 12. As for the other slot:

Abbott - can slide into the rotation
Ferrer - big jump, but if they want a lefty and move Erasmo or Espino into the rotation
NRI vet - Banda (bullpen)? Peralta (can start)? Kuhl?

Figure Rainey can be 60 day IL to create a slot. Probably Stras as well.

I mean, its gotta go to someone who can pitch more than 3 innings, no?

Not on the roster.  Nats starters were dead last in pitches per inning pitched last year.

The control this Spring has been a little better, but this is going to be another year of wearing out bullpen arms with repetitive 4-5 inning starts.  I would respond with a creative strategy to manage this, but not expecting that from Rizzo, Davey, or especially Jim Hickey.

He turns 25 this year, really hope he's not another addition to Rizzo's first round draft pick Hall of Shame.

There are two parts of the Hall of Shame.  There's one wing dedicated to the TINSTAAPP injuries. There's another wing with the "WTF was he thinking?" entries.  There's exhibits with Seth Romero in both wings.  Not sure where to put the Mason Denaburg display.

Interesting comment from Davey.  He mentioned Irvin as being in the mix to start, notwithstanding him being sent down already.

Quote
If Cavalli’s health is in question, Washington could look internally for another starter. Cory Abbott, Joan Adon and Paolo Espino — all on the 40-man roster — made starts last season. Martinez said the team could look at Jake Irvin, who was optioned to Rochester earlier Tuesday. Chad Kuhl is in camp as a nonroster invite, and finding another arm in free agency is always an option.

1:10 PM vs the fish. I believe mlb radio is carrying the Marlins broadcast.

1. Thomas (RF)
2. Smith (1B)
3. Call (CF)
4. Dickerson (LF)
5. Vargas (SS)
6. Garcia (2B)
7. Chavis (3B)
8. Robles (DH)
9. Adams (C)

Corbin (P)

Arano is shut down now.  See the injuries thread.  I think this may make Abbott close to a lock given his ability to "pitch" multiple innings.  Swing-man profile.

Anibal Sanchez is going to be our fifth starter. Matt Adams everyday DH. Mark and Mike also looking at bringing back Parra as team mascot/leadoff hitter. Buy some 2019 gear while you're at the stadium, guys! Remember baby shark?

He's been fixed. The secret all along was to just never have him pitch.

I’m up north since yesterday but ok central Florida has been no rain for several weeks. Hotter than normal and dry. One night late we had a big downpour.  That’s about it. Think the coasts have been in the same weather pattern which is great for baseball. The hot and dry weather will soon be followed by even hotter and wet.

Flew into DCA yesterday and the pilot had a dickens of a time landing. Plane bounced and must have been near end of runway and he put on the brakes hard.
