Williams was brought into be a deadline trade piece. If he pitches badly enough, might actually keep him another year.
Maybe the "deadline trade piece" does not exist. Consider last season: Cruz, Cesar Hernandez, Maikel Franco...just those I remember. None of them brought anything at the deadline. Maybe the only players were bringing in are those good enough to play regularly all season.
