I like Shake Shack fries. Five Guys is too greasy and they give me too many.  :hysterical:

Some things you have to learn on your own - always take an impermeable bag or other container to place your Five Guys carry-out order in for the ride home.  Else you'll have excessive oil saturating your carpet or seat.  It may have been new peanut oil frying Rigby Idaho's finest potatoes, but after the grease has been in your car a week the romance is over.

They don’t cool them long enough between the blanch and the fry. It’s a shame because they are a great product poorly prepared.

Every time I’ve eaten at Shake Shack, the burger tasted really good and then a while later I got an intense stomachache. As a result, I haven’t eaten at one since at least prior to the pandemic.

Smash burger chains seem overpriced. It's really not that hard to do at home and while it may not be quite as good, it will be substantially cheaper.

Ok, but they taste fine to me.  My palete is not advanced.

I never really get them take out but know what you mean about the grease.  But even the small fries is too many for two of us.  Burgers are good though.

I'm not much of a fries guy, but occasionally break down and try some. 5 Guys usually seem soggy when I do try them. May be the oil? The potatoes are good.

Edit: of course, Blue911 has the right answer. I'll stick to Sysco stuff.

The Florida Mall here has a Shake Shack AND a Five Guys.  Pure genius.  Almost makes taking the wife shopping pleasant .

Hmmm.....wonder what it could be.

If he doesn't eat French fries or other potatoes, it could be the bun...it's made with potato starch.

Folks may not know they're allergic to potatoes and can experience severe issues with even trace amounts.

The Shake Shacks Korean Chix sammy is great depending on what location you go. Montgomrey Mall is great and Cabin John below average.
Same situation at Popeyes. My local one near Tenley Town not so good. I was in the Wheaton area and went to the one at Wheaton Mall. Really good but not quite Chicken Fil A good. Love the spicy deluxe.

The popeyes ghost pepper sammich was messy but good.  Not exactly spicy but also not dull.

I eat potatoes all the time, and I also buy Martin's brand potato rolls when we plan to have burgers. So I doubt it's a potato allergy.

It depends on how busy they are.  Our 5-guys isn't that busy, so they wait until you walk in the door (or signal your near arrival with your app) to drop the fries in. I agree with Blue that the twice fried method execution matters, but we seem to get them okay.  I think if they're busy the just production line them for max throughput.

This is such a better option. When I was working at the BBQ place, I ground brisket everyday for hamburgers. No filling no preservatives just fresh ground beef.

Shake Shack burgers are just decent and overpriced for what they are, but the fries really set them apart. They're always perfectly crispy and well-seasoned/salted.

Five Guys, OTOH, are floppy/soggy and not always salty enough. Never understood the hype. I think people get all excited because of the quantity, but I'll take quality over quantity any day - especially when it's an empty calorie item.

The thing about salt, personal preferences vary.  One can always add salt to taste, but you can't really take it off if you get too much (though I have tried).  I like Five Guys because they are fresh cut, include the skins and they use fresh peanut oil which I prefer.  I haven't tried Shake Shack so can't comment.  I do agree that Five Guys can be floppy, perhaps could be a bit crisper but they are good as is.  One thing I hate, those fries that have starch coating which is intended to keep the exterior crispy.  WTF is that stuff anyway?  Just another example of excessive processing that isn't making things better.

Bringing home Five Guys (or any fries, really), they of course cool off and lose some of the initial appeal.  Put them on a cookie sheet and broil for a minute or whatever and they are rejuvenated.

Spelunkers has already been mentioned - they have excellent fries though much more modest quantity.  They also have real milk shakes -so you can go burger, shake, fries and it's all going to be excellent.  In Vienna, Plaka Grill kicks ass with their gyros and a single portion of fries is a large amount (good for 2) as well as has an interesting seasoning.  They are thinner fries so they cool off fast on the ride home.

I prefer the softer fries from places like Five Guys and Foster's over Shake Shack. Just a personal preference thing I guess. Not a fan of In & Out's fries either as they always seem undercooked.

Air Fryer is really good for reheating fries as well.

Last time I was at Spelunker's some younger guy ordered their hottest level of chicken sandwich, despite warnings from staff and other customers that he didn't know what he was getting himself into. He made it about 2 bites into the sandwich before giving up.

Plaka is freaking awesome. If you are ever in Williamsburg, check out Spartan Gyro's, just as good if not better.

I toss fries, and pizza, into a dry cast iron skillet. It’s also how I make toast.
