It's Crews or Skenes.

You can't be afraid to take an arm. You never know about injury. He could get hurt. Theres still value around the injury. College hitters have failed as well. The talent is worth it, and especially if Crews is gone, the positional need is obviously huge. He'd be one of the elite prospects in baseball the moment he signs.

Took the L and got out pitched:
—-
Hagen Smith final line:

3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 76 pitches

Paul Skenes final line:

3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER 2 BB, 2 HBP, 3 K 87 pitches

It’s easy to suck in Hoover (Alabama).

If those are clearly the two best players then you take whomever the Pirates do not.  No brainer. Team needs arms and bats. If you end up with a glut at any position you have the DH or trades.  Easy peasy.

I was thinking about the Dodgers last night. Players leave and the Dodgers have two more step forward to replace him. Maybe a glut of good players means the Dodgers just over-power anyone they face. Out of curiosity, I stepped through the Dodgers season-by-season and could not find that they ever had to re-build, at least from 1947 onward. A couple times they finished a little under .500 and bounced up to become a 90-win team.

Wow. Here's hoping the Nats can do that.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel has the Pirates taking Max Clark #1 overall with the Nats taking Crews.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/37748894/2023-mlb-mock-draft-10-kiley-mcdaniel-first-round-projection

Keith Law:
Quote
If this were last year’s draft, he’d probably have been in the mix to be the first overall pick; I’d rank him over Druw Jones, who was first on my board last year, as Clark is a better hitter and runner who doesn’t have Jones’ present power. I doubt he gets any further than the fifth pick this year, as he’s got the three college titans to contend with (LSU’s Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes, plus Florida’s Wyatt Langford) as well as North Carolina prep outfielder Walker Jenkins, who’s less tooled-up but is still a premium athlete who has more raw and game power right now. That said, any team that takes Clark in the top five is getting a potential superstar, and it wouldn’t surprise me if in five years he ends up the best player.

it seems it's becoming debatable as to who the best player is. Clark is getting some attention, and there are some arguing that Langford is better than Crews. It seems the top five are becoming interchangeable.

McDaniel's feeling about what the Nats are thinking at this point:

"They love Crews and Skenes in that order, and they’ll take whichever one is left at 2."

We want Crews, trust me. Skenes would be a great consolation but I don’t trust our training staff with any power arm.

The problem may be that the GM selecting at #2 presumably trusts the training staff

I said it earlier in this thread but Crews is the best baseball player I’ve seen come through LSU. Too young to have seen Albert Belle and Todd Walker but since 1998-on he’s the best. But it’s pretty much consensus amongst the fan base that he is the best to come through the program.

Yeah I’d feel a lot better if Rizzo wasn’t running the show. Hopefully he doesn’t overthink this draft.

Either will be fine. Skenes will be the next Stephen Strasburg, and Crews might be the next Bryce Harper. Either will be good enough, and either are as good as it will get with the new draft rules intended to stop big teams from tanking too often.

Me? I'd love to see the next Strasburg. Nats protected Strasburg, remember, when he had his TJS. In spite of all the "experts" who wanted to be as "brave" as Matt Harvey.

on the off chance that we're horrible in 2024, and someone can figure out the draft rules for 2025, Ethan Holliday (Jackson's brother) is already being talked about as a generation player. He's currently 16 years old.

As little as I can understand, if the Nats flop in 2024, they are eligible for one of the top picks. Of course, the Nats are going to be respectable next season.

From the KLaw chat today:

aholla: If Stephen Strasburg was coming out of San Diego State this year, would he be a unanimous lock to go No. 1 overall or would there be some arguing for a hitter given rising concerns about pitcher durability?

Keith Law: Paul Skenes is, in effect, Stephen Strasburg in this draft. And Skenes isn’t a lock to go 1.

--

G: Recent buzz has Max Clark as an option for the Pirates at 1st overall. I know the top-5 in this class is very strong, but would passing on Crews/Skenes/Langford be a Bryan Bullington level error on the Pirates part?

Keith Law: I think that’s been the buzz all spring – if they wanted to go HS, he’d be the choice. And in some drafts he’d be 1-1. It doesn’t hurt that he plays about 20 minutes from Pittsburgh’s AAA affiliate, so any exec in town to see their prospects can just pop over and see him too. I think the risk they run if they take Clark is that a year from now Crews and Skenes are in the big leagues and Clark is in A-ball, even maybe doing well there, but they’ve missed a chance to get someone who gets there almost right away.

--

Some other good Nats stuff in there as well like:

Optimistic Nats Fan: One analyst I read said he did not see more than one above-average MLB player out of MacKenzie Gore, Josiah Gray, Keibert Ruiz,  CJ Abrams, James Wood, Brady House, Elijah Green, Jarlin Susana, or Rober Hassell.

Agree or disagree?

Keith Law: I disagree. A lot.

--

Optimistic Nats Fan: Scouting the statline: Carter Keiboom and Brady House have similar numbers in A-ball. How are they different?

Keith Law: House destroys baseballs.

God imagine how elite a OF of Crews/Green/Wood would be in 2025/26.

I mean, if you really do luck into Crews, Green is probably the one you trade.

What are the success stories of other prospects striking out 50% of the time in low-A ball and then going on to have a productive major league career?

I'm legitimately asking btw, this isn't meant to be Elijah Green snark haha
