Since he has also been a hitter, has Skenee thrown less over the years than his peers?

Just a pitcher who is routinely pumping triple digits before he can legally drink.

Not saying it isn't a valid concern. I imagine he will at the very least have TJS with whoever ends up drafting him. I was just curious if there were any other concerns (e.g., previous injury, weird delivery, etc.) on top of that.

why I wonder about whether he's a DH while he recovers from TJS. That's what Ohtani did for a year, IIRC. If his bat is MLB calaiber, then that gives him a better floor than most pitchers going at the top of the draft.

Fwiw, I remember reading somewhere that he was a 2nd-3rd round caliber talent with the bat

Pirates reddit really wants crews.  Small section want Skenes as the draft is the only way for Pittsburgh to get an ace.  And you need a top line starter (probably 2) to go deep in the playoffs.

Also some jokes about how they’ll pick the 15th best player to reallocate money around the draft

At least with rizzo and the nats we know we’ll draft the guy we like best at #2 regardless of money

This system is so devoid of high end starting pitching. Maybe Cavalli after his injury recovery, but Susana and Henry are likely relievers. Almost have to go for Skenes if Crews is gone and hope he moves through the system at JZ / Strasburg pace so they don't mess him up

Gray's pitching says it clearly: hope for Skenes.

Crews is going to fall to us, isn't he? There's so much hype around Skenes right now.

It sucks that the lottery is a lottery because I see the Nats taking him 1-1. Now the only reason I could see Skenes not going 1-1 right now is the first pick IS the Pirates, and it's quite likely they will have to go overslot to sign him. I don't know if the Pirates would be willing to tank the rest of their draft to give him all their bonus pool money. If Skenes is there at number 2, I think you can bank on the Nats tanking the rest of their draft to give him all the bonus pool money.

Yeah, it's like choosing between Harper and Strasburg. There's no reason to complain about either. Obviously we're in better shape in the minors at OF, but you take the best player available.

Crews so far this year: .543 /.664 /.947, 9 HRs in 28 games.

For comparison, that's about .090 points ahead of anyone else in BA, .064 ahead of anyone else in OBP, but only 3rd in slugging. The top guy is at .958, and both #1 and #2 play 1B, Crews plays CF.

Hope for Skenes, but be happy with Crews. There is no way to know which way the Pirates will go.

LSU keeping me sane while I watch the worst version of the Nats I’ve seen. Back to the dark days of being a DC sports fan.

It’s a gruesome sight man, holy hell. Sucks that Cavalli got injured for multiple reasons of course, not the least of which is that a healthy Cavalli would’ve given me a second reason to watch this bunch every few days. Right now it’s REALLY difficult to feel any type of investment in this group outside of the Gore starts. The draft process has absolutely been a saving grace for me with this org.

Better days ahead hopefully good brothers.

I'm calling the AAA rochester rotation "Irvin and the Absence of Hope."  OK, if Henry proves IanR right and that recovery from TOS is a snap, then "Irvin, Henry, and the Hopeless." If one of the lame (Rutledge, I'm looking at you) turns out to be something, then the pressure to take Skenes if available is less, but otherwise, we are stuck waiting Andry Lara and hoping Aldo Ramirez has a second act.

Rutledge has looked good when healthy. However, even if Henry and Rutledge are healthy, the Nats need the next Steven Strasburg, or someone almost as good. Each game, the Nats starters flop. Gore looks good, but Corbin? Gray? The 2023 rotation looks almost as bad as that of 2022.

Tons of draft talk in the latest KL chat, but this stuck out to me:

Derek: If Skenes maintains the same performance for the rest of the year, would you consider him at 1-1? Or is it just impossible for any breakable pitcher to be preferable to Crews/Langford given how good those guys are?

Keith Law: Personally, I would not take a pitcher at 1-1 with an elite college position player available, and this year there are two of those guys. Skenes looks Gerrit Cole-level good right now, but all pitchers are breakable – even if you think he IS Gerrit Cole, you’ve got two hitters who project to that kind of output as well.

pretty solid assessment. If the Nats had the choice of Strasburg or Harper, I'd think you'd take Harper.

even there, it was high school harper vs college strasburg. I imagine Crews is even more definite. If Pitt does something strange, then it has to be Crews by this thinking.

Yep. Plus, you have the compounding factor of this awful lottery system. The Nats (ostensibly) can’t pick higher than 10th next year irrespective of our record and then once that’s reset the year after, we’re subject to the whims of the lottery again (so we could be picking 7th in that draft after another last place finish). You kinda HAVE to come away from this cycle with a foundational player. At least that’s how I view things.

Bonus pools released.  Nationals 3rd at $14.5 million.  #2 pick is slotted at $8,998,500. Our second pick (#40 overall) is slotted at $2,144,700.  3rd pick (#71 overall) slotted for $1,021,300/

Torkelson has the modern bonus record at $8.4 million.  Have to imagine crews will look to break that.
