It’s very risky business investing high draft capital into hard throwing pitchers. The payoff is obviously significant as delineated earlier when you hit, but I’d always err on the side of position players in the high first and then invest in power arms throughout the next eight or so rounds.

Ouch, that sucks. 19 years old and already progressed to AA where he was dominating. He probably would have cracked the rotation this year though on an innings limit (only threw 105 last year)

Still, he's only 19 (but his mind is older).  Now's the time to get the TJ out of the way if that's what he needs. He's still way ahead of his peers on the development chart.

Maybe change the title to “MLB draft 2023, yeas we know it’s early very likely to change almost hourly but what the hell”

Yea but no reason to think he’s will not come back from TJ surgery in late 2024 and be ready for MLB in 2025. When he is 21. Meanwhile Nats have health issues with Kieboom and Brady House.  So it’s not easy to tell.  Pitchers are half the rosters now and you have to find them somewhere. Just take the best player.

Fair point.

Skenes is pitching right now on the SEC+. You can watch the game on the ESPN app. Get to get eyes on Crews as well.

Skenes has already hit triple digits multiple times two batters in.

Edit: Struck out a pair working heavily off the fastball. It’ll be interesting to see the secondary stuff as the game progresses. The fast ball was fairly straight in the first, but still pretty overpowering. Gave up a single on one of them, but blew two batters away with it as well.

They are playing Butler, so the competition is pretty light.

That sucks. I have Directv and I’m logged into the app via my Directv subscription.

Skenes has basically blown away this Butler squad with just the fastball. They can’t do anything with this type of velo. He’s hitting triple digits whenever he wants to through three. In the fourth he started to throw the slider a bit more and it looked solid.

Bottom line is he looks very good. The fastball control has been a bit spotty but nothing egregious, and really, he looks like prime Josh Beckett from a physical perspective. He’s just a horse that throws seeds.

Watching Crews tonight (and knowing the  primacy K Law places on tools), I think that Langford finishes above Crews at the end of this process for him. He clearly has a bit more power, the hit tool is comparable (if not a hair better), and he’s reportedly faster. As long as Langford continues hitting (and there’s no reason to think that he won’t), I don’t think their positioning changes for Law.

Crews goes yard after looking befuddled for the first few at bats. The Butler pitcher has been pitching between 70-80 mph this entire game and he left a 80 mph fastball up in the zone, but it’s still good to see Crews crush that mistake.

No worries!

I made a mistake on the pitch that Crews caught up to! Was a fastball that appeared to be a changeup it tumbled into the zone so slowly! I made the correction.

Skenes action

13 strikeouts through 6, the last being on a 97 mph fastball. He’s had three fastballs under 97 mph in the entire game.

Yeah same for me. Been watching some basketball. Of course I won’t be able to watch the finals of any of these tournaments because I have cut the cord.

This looks like a good draft class. I think if the Nats ends up with Langford, Crewes, Skenes, or Dollander it will be a good draft.

Law thinks that it’s the best class in better than a decade.

Plenty of relevant draft responses from Keith Law’s chat today:

Paul: Is there a reason Langford isn’t universally considered a better hitting prospect than Crews outside of the famous name? They seem to have similar contact and walk rates and Langford clearly has more power. Am I missing something?

Keith Law: Langford’s also a better runner, but Crews plays CF now while Langford plays a corner. Crews is definitely more famous and has been a GUY since he was a HS junior. There’s a comfort level with the longer track record. I have had several scouts come back to me to say they’d take Langford over Crews, though

Juwan: Is Skenes a viable candidate to go top 3? Do you like his secondary offerings enough for that type of ascension assuming he stays healthy and continues performing well?

Keith Law: Yes, he’s on track to pass Dollander at this point.

James: If you were Rizzo, would you shy away from taking a Wyatt Langford second overall because of the prospect pool already accrued or would you leap at the opportunity to add another high end prospect in that area to give yourself a better chance of assembling your outfield of the future? Question’s really a resource allocation consideration.

Keith Law: Best player available.

Matt: How concerned are you about Chase Dollander’s inability to find his slider this year? It looked like a legit plus plus pitch last year and now it’s just disappeared. Would an MLB team feel confident that they could help him get it back after they drafted him?

Keith Law: I get more concerned each week. Is it health? Hard to think of a comparable example of a guy going from a 70ish breaking pitch to a wildly inconsistent pitch that’s mostly a 45 without an injury.
