US soccer journalist Grant Wahl died at the stadium today covering the Argentina game. His brother, who is an open homosexual, thinks the Qatari government murdered him for wearing a rainbow shirt the other day.
part of me says would they be that stupid to risk embarrassment?   the other part of me says would anyone have the balls to do anything?

When people are shocked, and grieving, they can think all sorts of things, not always rationally. How long had he been showing symptoms of illness? If before the article, then...

I think this is just a tragic coincidence, and the brother is just lashing out, looking for someone to blame when asking 'why?',,,

I think he had said he was sick for a couple of weeks.  Went to the medical unit there and they said no Covid and probably bronchitis.  Just needed to rest and chose not to; just tragic stuff.  Probably had some genetic condition that made him susceptible to his symptoms.  Everything is a conspiracy theory nowadays.

Actually it’s all ball bearings nowadays.

So, what's the over under on number of shots for Morocco today? Maybe 10 minutes of possession? Not that that's important.

Morocco's chances looked more dangerous. Portugal I think was trying to draw them out of their shell. Now Morocco will be even more reluctant to open up.

Crossbar would have been awesome

Ok. Who had Croatia and Morocco in the semis.
Misssed the earlier game. Will watch this one. Should be entertaining. Not sure who to root for? Will pull for England for our colleague Natsie. Was surprised at my betting site that odds are about even.

Thanks, PWC - much appreciated...Global Powerhouse suffers short-circuit against France. Actually a very creditable performance - the game was far more competitive than expected, albeit helped by Mbappe having (by his standards) something of an off-night. The GP's penalty woes continue... :(     France were the better team, but the GP's performance suggests that they will be serious contenders at USA '26.

Allez Les Bleus!!!  ;)

Les Bleus defense looked like it had some holes.  I think the Morocco may give them a good game.  Their defense is tough to break down and they don't waste chances in transition.

USA/England final in 2026.

So, as we reflect upon our team's WC, what can we conclude?

I'll begin by 'blowing-our-own-trumpet' - our joint prediction that this was a tournament too early, for both teams, proved to be correct. However, the future looks positive.

For the GP it's 'more of the same' - as the players mature as individuals, and the team as a collective (this squad will form the nucleus of the team for many years to come) then those missing quality elements should improve. If Southgate continues, then he now has ample evidence that this is the style the GP should play, rather than lapsing into his inate conservatism over formation and tactics.  And yet more penalty practise...

For the S&S, Berhalter has a tight squad - what is glaringly obvious is the need for greater composure, and quality, in the final third; there were games where Team USA could have had it put away with better scoring attempts. They (probably) need just one or two more players who play in higher quality leagues, than MLS, to go over that tipping point to become consistent challengers.

I have now (probably) just guaranteed that the GP won't qualify for USA'26... :hysterical:

A little help on soccer lingo please. I get that a #10 is an attacking central midfielder with passing and dribbling skills, and that a #9 is a striker/ scorer who can contest with big defenders for crosses and can get off shots in tight spaces. Do I have this right? What would be an 11? I assume another striker?

Yes. Have a read at this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football_positions - and I'll be happy to have-a-go at any further questions... ;)

Harry Kane is still the best. That hurts.

On jargon, I refuse to say or even think "1v1" when we all know "one-on-one". Or "pitch" when we know it's a "field". Any other jargon that is perfectly fine from a British announcer but that makes no sense from an American speaking to Americans?

This winter, Dave may finally say, "Finally, a useful purpose for my fur." Not much use in Qatar for the warm layer.

I'm guessing Dave would give Larry a decent scrap, although Larry's a tough one.

I feel bad for Kane.  He was having a good game, and made his first PK.  I was impressed with how he got back on defense.
