They made the finals 3 times without winning.  Bridesmaids.
Every time I see Netherlands I think of Cruyff and the Orange Clockwork team and a Sports Illustrated cover on them in the 1970s. Didn’t pay attention then so have no idea what they won but thought the orange uniforms looked cool.

From what I understand, Cruyff was smoking a couple of packs a day in the 70s

Did not see the first half. Now to convince the one year old that she wants to watch USMNT.

No matter what, the last games in Group B are going to be interesting.  And simultaneous, so lots of channel flipping.

I tried to watch some of the USA-Wales match, but kept thinking of this:

It's hard with traditional power houses like Wales and Iran.

Exactly. Chances to put things away, yet it went the way that it went. “They’re young“ seems to join the latest list of rationales, which looks especially bad given what seemed like a gift of a draw and the promising beginning. Think I’ll start the four year wait before bothering to care for a day or two.

Keep in mind though that Iran is 1-0 vs the US in a World Cup.  And England is 0-0 vs Wales.

The Netherlands team, of the '70's, is regarded as the finest never to win the World Cup. Under the management of Rinus Michels, they played what was known as 'totaalvoetbal' - 'total football' - where any outfield player could play in any position, so the intended organizational structure could always be maintained. Cruyff is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, as well as one of its best managers. He is also considered to have been one of the most influential figures in modern football - as well as introducing the 'Cruyff Turn' (see video)

USA game was as competitive as anticipated, in the second half. It was always going to be that Team USA's main task would be to contain Bale - they almost succeeded. Wales are no pushovers, so definitely a creditable performance. Great result for England, in terms of group qualification. Roll on Friday....

England performing better than expected, but the result is no better than it should have been against such opposition - Iran's approach, to the second half, seemed to be to hack down as many England players as possible. Friday's game should be a sterner test... ;)

Oh - could someone tell McKennie that his hair makes it look like he supports France...

And England are 0–1–1 against the USA, although the loss was in 1950.

Unfortunately, for Team USA, Rob Green isn't playing on Friday... But looking forward to a good game, on the evidence of Team USA's first half, against Wales.

That sums it up.  A victory today and they could probably lose to England and advance by beating Iran.  Now all the pressure is on to at least get a point from the game Friday.  A tall order.

I watched only the second half and the USA looked not so good.  Wonder how they lost their first half mojo?

Goff from the WaPo says the USA is 1-11-6 vs European teams since 1990. Portugal was the victim

Part of it seemed to be Wales just getting their act together.
