I think Vegas wins the west. The east is a tossup. Edmonton has cap issues going into next year and is likely to lose their top defenseman. This was their best chance this year.
Top defenseman and Edmonton is an oxymoron.

Bouchard is good. The rest of the defense...not so much.

Still don't understand playing Skinner given the series he was having. Campbell looked much better the three times Skinner was pulled. The defensive woes were apparent, but outside of McDavid, the offense struggled this series as well. Draisatl strugged, Nugent-Hopkins was nowhere to be seen. Kane was off as well.

People underestimate Vegas.  They had the best record in the West. Marchessault seems to have found the fountain of youth after an awful first round. Crazy to think that this is Eichel's first ever run in the playoffs.

Bouchard is good on the power play but not defensively.  He is not considered one of their first pair defense. If you look at any top 30 or 40 NHL defense lists they don’t have any one on it.

I’m not sure why they went back to Skinner. Lots of pressure on a rookie. I don’t think Campbell is very good but not sure about Skinner long term?  Not sure what his upside is.

Don’t sleep on the Dallas Stars.  Good defense and goaltending.  Not flashy but seem to have enough offense.
Ottinger is one of the better goalies in the league but was pulled last game. Kraken kind of doing it with mirrors.

No goals after one?  What kind of hockey is this?

The longest game in NHL history had a 1–0 final score.

After 116:30 of overtime, that is. (16:30 into the sixth overtime.)

I seem to recall a Caps 4OT loss against the Isles (shudder)

Been on Dallas so far so will stick with them in the West.  Robertson need to start scoring though. Will go with Carolina in the East. Looks like Teravainen is back. Impressive they have won without their top two scorers.

Definitely would prefer Dallas and Florida, but at least it looks like there should be some good games

Going to Europe soon so let the sling tv package lapse as of next Tuesday.  So can watch the first part of the conference finals. Figured would not be watching at all with the time difference anyway.  Assume the NBA playoffs will be on TV there?  Can catch some highlights on the internet.

Oh, I certainly remember watching that game. At the time, it was the fifth-longest game in NHL history. It's now the 11th-longest, although it's still the longest Game 7. The 4OT Caps–Pittsburgh game in 1996 was the third-longest game ever when it was played, although it's now the sixth-longest due to three more recent games that each went to a fifth overtime.

The two NHL games that reached a sixth overtime were both played in the 1930s, which is significant because they didn't yet resurface the ice between periods. The ice resurfacing machine, commonly known as a Zamboni even though there are other brands on the market, was not invented until 1949 and was not used in the NHL until 1955. The alternative is to have arena staff "flood" the ice, literally flooding it with water from hoses and then squeegy it to smooth it out. But they didn't do that in the 1930s because it took too long—they only did ice maintenance between games. I can't imagine how bad the ice must have been in the ninth period! Incidentally, they used the technique of "flooding" the ice at the 2011 Heritage Classic in Calgary because the wind chill at ice level of –13°F was deemed to be too cold to use ice resurfacing machines—the concern was that the machines' weight would crack the ice in the exceptionally cold air.

Speaking of Zambonis, our nephew drives the Zamboni at the Florida Panthers' practice facility. So I guess in view of the family connection I'd like to see them win the Cup this year out of the remaining four teams.

Arizona voters rejected a stadium deal to build the Coyotes a new home in Tempe. The team will explore other options.

Houston, KC, and Quebec have been talked about as potential landing spots.

Playoffs resume. Teravainen back for the Canes. Go Ghost.  He apparently grew up near the Florida arena.

Made it through 2 OTs. Too late a finish for me. Panthers 8 straight OT wins. Bob has been great.

I remember watching the Caps two 4OT games. The second of those, the "Petr Nedved game," was at the time the third-longest game in NHL history. Now it's the sixth-longest, as last night's game was about 31 seconds longer. We turned it off after the first overtime. Glad we didn't try to stay up. I wouldn't have been able to stay awake anyway.

My comment further up the thread about the 1987 game against the Islanders being the 11th-longest game was correct when I made it three days ago, but now it's the 12th-longest. What's interesting about all these long games in recent history is that the 1987 game was the first game since 1971 to go to a third overtime and the first since 1951 to go to a fourth. So there have been a good number of 4OT games (and three 5OT games) in the years since 1987 after there having been none for some 36 years.

Sometime after approximately 11:35, as that's roughly when I recall we went to sleep.

Overtime periods go faster than regulation periods because there are no TV timeouts. There is one designated time for the ice crew to shovel snow, which occurs whenever the first stoppage is after the 10:00 point of any given overtime period, and sometimes TV cuts to commercial then, but that's it.

It was after 12 when I stopped watching after the second OT. So 1:30?
