Way to use the Giants to drive up the price.

The Judge deal really makes the Nats offer to Soto of $440 over 15 years look like crap. Soto should be looking for something like 12/$500 million at this point.

Or maybe they think Preller’s an idiot.

Well, who in their right mind would rather live/work in the Bronx or Philly than in San Diego? Therefore, it has to be Soto. :couch:

At this point it wouldn't be surprising to see the Padres blow the team up this coming season.

Maybe the Cubs should have dealt Contreras?

Just proves if the Yankees want you that's where you're going. From all reports Judge is a good man.

Barry Bonds and Greg Maddux both turned down FA offers from the Yankees years back.

Wheeler is a free agent after 2024.  So this helps them bridge that also.  Expect Nola to be upped soon.  It may be the best time for the Nats to be bad as the Phillies/Braves/Mets will be juggernauts the next few seasons.
Or, likely for many more seasons than just the "next few." A mega-wealthy, high spending owner is a must, not a luxury, to compete in the NL East.

Bogearts to the padres for 11/280 million, no opt-outs and a no-trade clause.  They finally got a new SS

The plan has to be to move Bogaerts to third when Machado leaves for free agency

So will Boras dictate that they weaken their defense by playing Boegarts at SS?  They probably would be best off by having him in LF and having Tatis at 2B and Cronenworth at 1B. Keep Kim at SS. I am sure Preller will figure it out.

Has an opt out after next season I think? He'll take it. Bogaerts and Judge are both getting  deals into theit 40s for over 280 milliok. Pretty sure Machado is going to be able to make more than 120 million in free agency.

As of right now, the rest of the Padres infield is a better defender at shortstop than Bogaerts

fwiw, there was some talk that, even if Bogaerts had stayed in Boston, he might eventually move to left when Mayer is ready, assuming Devers was retained.

Also, the Noah Song pick by Philly is an interesting one.   I don't know how much more of his Navy commitment remains, but he has not pitched in a long time, other than a few invites and maybe some USA ball.  The Red Sox had tried to get him on one of those athlete deals where they are either posted near the team or get out of their commitment early because of their exceptional talent, but it was not granted (I think the Pats long snapper, Joe Cardona, is on this type of deal; he's posted at the Newport, RI (maybe the sub school there?)). If he can play, he'd be an interesting stash for a year.  He's supposed to be better than mid-rotation if he's anything like what he was.

more on Song:

Quote
Song, 25, was an interesting choice. Because he attended the U.S. Naval Academy — graduating in 2019 — he is required to serve five years in the Navy. Song petitioned the Navy in 2019 to get a waiver to delay his active service until after his baseball career, which was unresolved. He petitioned for another waiver in 2022, but according to the Boston Globe, that petition also remains unresolved.

Because of Song’s ongoing military service, he has been placed on the military list. Until he is activated off that list, he will not be added to the Phillies’ 40-man roster. Once he is activated, he’ll be subject to Rule 5 stipulations, meaning that the Phillies will have to carry him on the big league roster for an entire year.

The Navy is pretty desperate for people right now. I cant imagine they are willing to let a Academy grad go to play minor league ball

especially one they trained as a pilot.  It doesn't release him from his service obligations, but it does let him defer it.  I guess Cardona on the Pats is active but given leave to practice and play.  I think he's a sub instructor if I remember.

I wonder why the Red Sox didn't use the military list to hide him from Rule 5. I guess they didn't want to instantly add him to the 40 man roster if the exception goes through.

When Bryce Harper signed his contract some of the talk was the Phillies will be sorry they're going to have to pay Harper $25 million at the age of 38. The way things are going it seems the talk is going to change to at least the Phillies only have to pay Harper $25 million through age 38.
