Mantha is on IR, per this morning's Post. Don't know what that might mean for the much-discussed possibility of trading him.

Caps taking out their frustrations on the Rangers.

This is a good year to tank though. Besides Bedard, the draft is supposed to be deep.  I believe Caps are at spot 10 coming into this game.

My wife got this at Wegmans yesterday. The big question: Will it be better at holding groceries than the Caps are at holding a lead?

The broken glass is a good metaphor for all of the shattered dreams of the past 3-4 years.

Multiple reports that Caps traded Marcus Johansson to Minnesota for a third-round pick (although the reports don't say in which year's draft).

Caps trade Erik Gustafsson and Boston's first-round pick (acquired last week) to Toronto for Rasmus Sandin.

So Orlov, Hathaway and Gustafson for Sundin and a 2nd and 3rd pick in future drafts. Sounds underwhelming.  From what I am reading Sundin has one more year under contract at a relatively cheap price. Maybe they plan to sign him longer term. They have no defensemen signed past this year I believe. At least they are trying to make some deals and seem to have given up on this year. Sell, sell and sell.

No and he is why they cannot burn it down completely.  Need to keep Him happy as he chases the record.

Blackhawks only get a second rounder for Kane so hard to get a return on a rental. Think it a a first if they make conference finals but that’s still a late round pick. So guess the Caps will get what they can.

Carlson is the only one signed past this year. I think it was widely believed that Gustafsson's decent year this year meant his next contract was going to be too expensive for the Caps given his age (31). Sandin is 22 and has another year before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Most of the analysts are giving the Caps a very high grade for this particular trade, although it's fair to note, as you do, that they're effectively viewing it in isolation without considering to what extent the Orlov/Hathaway deal may have factored into setting this one up (and remember they did land a player in that deal, Craig Smith; I have no idea whether they view him as someone they plan to keep around).

Fair points. I think the Smith contract is expiring also. They need to look for young cheap guys if not after picks. Have no idea what extending Sundin will cost?  Gustafson is terrible defensively.  So understand why they sold on him.

Trying to get younger.  It makes sense in the long run.  Sandin has been starting to show some promise and he's probably about as worthwhile as anyone they would have taken with Boston's pick.  I don't mind it.

Yeah, I'm all for keeping Ovi but this is the one side effect I'm not too thrilled with.  Can't trade someone like Oshie because we gotta keep the core around AO.  Gonna be a slow rebuild, unfortunately.

I guess I’m just wondering why Toronto would want to give up on a good defenseman when they have problems in that area.  Especially for one who has deficiencies. I guess they are like f*** the defense we will just outscire everyone. And take a flyer on a late first round pick.

Orlov scores the opening goal for Boston tonight.  Don’t think I can root for Boston in the post season but….

So Ovi. Backstrom. Kuznetsov. Oshie. Carlson. Wilson. Is that correct?  Couldn’t see all the faces.

Thanks.

Bad win. Need to LOSE, LOSE, LOSE.

Saw Eller in an Avs uniform last night. Didn’t take him long to get there.

This is the year to tank. They got a late start but there is still time.

Alas, Mr Hyde didn't get rid of Dr Jeckyll back in December when they still had a chance - no Tanqueray
