I think he had some thought of not wanting to get it on an empty net, but at the same time, there was the thought of wanting him to get it at home (the next game is Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, and how do you ensure he doesn’t get one there?).
I find it hard to object to empty-net goals. Gretzky had his famous 50 goals in 39 games and the 50th goal was an empty-netter. Nobody argues that it cheapens the record. Empty-net goals just mean your team is playing well enough to win games such that the other team has to pull the goalie to try to catch up.
