Nats can totally find better production out of a JAG on the open market for 3.6M which is what Fedde is projected to make in arbitration.
Can they? We're not the Dodgers, Rays, or Astros. We dont really make adjustmente to pitchers. So who exactly are they getting thats better than Fedde at ~3.5 million

He is not good but not sure you would find anything decent for $3.5 million.

Hope your Mom is enjoying the Phillies run.
oh, heck, at this point I don't think Anibal is getting more than $3.5 million for a year. Maybe some bonuses for IP.

I was going to post this. I'd take a flier on Sanchez over Fedde at this point.

Also, my mom is a wreck with the Phillies, so I try not to bring it up.  :hysterical:

As I said you are not going to get much.

I think they need a veteran starter. And no reason they cannot pay $10-15 million for a year or two. However with the sale uncertain Rizzo is on a low budget and that’s probably why they are bringing Fedde back.

They need more than one vet SP. That was Rizzos mistake last year when he only signed the Sanchez’s and was counting on one of Stras and Ross being healthy.

I mean a real veteran pitcher who you can count on for innngs. Not someone like Sanchez. That was a punt by owners who didn’t want to spend any money. Two would be nice.

Mike Maddux is available (as is the Cardinals' hitting coach).

too old to pitch.

:mg:

Did Maddux stick around for 2018 or did he move to St L right away after Davey was hired.

IIRC, didn't Davey come in with Rizzo already retaining much of the coaching staff?

Maddux left on his own accord as the Nats were in the process of hiring a manager. He was not offered the managerial job and he moved on to St Louis as they fired the guy we hired(?)

Dylan Bundy or Rich Hill are free agents who wouldn't cost too much.

Rich Hill will be 43 in March and has gotten worse every season since 2019 (not surprisingly).

Twins have a club option on Bundy for $11 million his ERA was about 5.00 and has not been good the past couple years. Will see if they exercise it.  He could be a cheap bounce back guy.  Maybe $7.5 million?

Does anyone else wonder how low payroll will get if the sale doesn't go through? Will the Lerners sign off on a $7.5 million flier if they still own the team?

Probably not which is why they floated the Fedde back in the rotation idea.  Cheaper.

Another aspect is that there isnt a guarentee of a totation spot. Are guys like Bundy or Hill going to want to come here and be long relief? I mean, its a longshot that Strasburg is healthy enough to start the season, but still, they can get guaranteed spots elsewhere

I like Hill (not surprising) but he's topped 135 innings once since he returned to being a full time starter in 2016.  I'll take the the 4.00 FIP he's been around since 2017, and his ERAs are usually better than that, but I don't see the Nats as looking for a guy you are reluctant to go past 5 innings.  additionally, Hill I think is pretty happy to go back to stay in Boston (a native who returned there and where he's had success).

A sensible plan would bring in a guy who goes 150+ innings pretty consistently to go with likely the 3 kids and Corbin, and to have a few guys around like Espino or perhaps Fedde who you could start but rather wouldn't.  If Stras eventually tries to start, I'm sure it will be baby steps and I'm sure they would push somebody aside if they had to.  Maybe a 6 man rotation, or Corbin to the bullpen. Possibly one of the kids gets pulled from the rotation. If Mr. Innings Eater is so effective you don't want to push him aside, then he has trade value.  Embarrassment of riches would be an odd place to end up.

There is an article on MLB trade rumors saying he is open to sitting out the first few months and the signing with a contender. Even if the Nats were interested don’t think he will be.

I will keep pushing Kyle Gibson. Innings eater. Has faded down the stretch the past two seasons.  He is on the Phillies post season roster so far but has only pitched one inning. The one inning was not bad and he threw hard. He’s not very good but therefore not super expensive and he seems to be healthy. Can probably get him cheaper for two years.

2022 was better than 2021.  I buy he'll be 43 and should fade a bit, but he's been pretty consistent / reliable over the past 5 or 6 years.  At any rate, certainly not the guy the Nats should or can play for.  Not an innings eater.

Gibson, for comparison, has been around a 5 era guy with one downside exception over the past 4 seasons.  For that, I think we can just run out Fedde.

Fedde had arm problems this year. Fedde is there for when Gray/Gore/Cavalli miss time which will inevitably happen.

Signing Nelson Cruz helped the Nats achieve the worst record in MLB. Brilliant move.

Luke Voit is a finalist for the DH silver slugger award.
