Why is Clark Schmidt trying to close games for the Yankees in the postseason

Why Cashman and Boone still have roster and on-field decision making jobs eludes me

For short series requiring less than four wins, upsets can’t be that unexpected. Also add the more diluted the playoff structure, the less that lineup and rotation length and depth comprise an advantage, which could be what differentiates the teams during this season.

Any team coming out the wildcard round that can manage a split, they have a chance to close out at home with just two wins. Some might like the chaos, but it seems like it manages to largely negate the point of 162 games as far as determining those that should compete for the title.

That's baseball.  The favored teams all got to line up their starters as they wanted and rest their bullpens.  While the wild card teams usually went with their #3 starter in game one.  It's a big advantage and they just did not use it.  Best of five did make a difference.

Last year the Braves with 88 wins beat two 95 win teams and a 106-win Dodger team.  So yes not totally unexpected.  Nats won as the wild card in 2019.

The Cardinals are out.  Anything else in terms of eliminations of vile franchises is gravy at this point.

Cleveland has a much stronger team. They hit, they run, they field, and they pitch. The Yankees just hit home runs. Cole is their only big time starter, and he has lost a little since 2019. The Yankees don't have enough relief pitchers. The Astros will beat them in the ALDS, but the Yankees should be underdogs in this round.

I don’t think Cleveland is a better team. They won 7 fewer games playing in a weak division. They were the only team to finish above .500. However they are playing their best baseball at the right time. Just like the Phillies and Padres.

Umpire keeps calling low balls strikes. At least he’s doing it for both teams.

Still have one more game.

That actually sounds fun. The Evil Empire versus the Evilest Empire.

Ah. I haven’t been paying too much attention to the playoffs and thought the Yankees were up 2-1.

No, a massive collapse last night. I’m just learning now about the lengthy game in Seattle

The Yankees have one ace and a few pretty good starters. They have a thin bullpen. They have some good fielders, but they have built a team around hitting home runs. That makes for dull baseball and losing playoff baseball.

Throughout the season, Cashman has been criticized for enforcing obedience to analytics down to in-game decisions. Boone manages a game with "standard decisions" at every moment. Robot-like.
