He seems like Gore in terms of probably getting more contact than he deserves even with high k totals. The fouls drive up his pitch count.

First time since Scherzer in 2020 that a Nats pitcher has had consecutive starts with 10+ strikeouts

Back at the beginning of spring training Zuckerman said that Cavalli has the best stuff for a Nats pitchers since Strasburg. Good call there.

Via NationalsCommunications:
Quote
Cade Cavalli finished last night's outing by throwing 24 consecutive strikes. Per
@EliasSports

It was the only instance of 24+ straight strikes to end an outing since at least 2000.

Last instances of 24+ straight strikes at any point in a game:

Miles Mikolas (24) - 5/17/22 STL at NYM
Sandy Alcantara (24) - 8/28/21 vs. CIN

I’m wondering after 12 pitches and 5 outs Cavalli HBP , BB and then falls apart. I think there is a mental aspect to his performance that doesn’t rally to overcome a little adversity.

Possibly. But I saw him in Harrisburg. In one game, a flock of geese flew low over the field while he was pitching, disrupting the game. Then a few innings later, a skunk wandered onto the field while he was pitching, and the game was delayed while they waited for the skunk to amble off (No one on the grounds crew tried to remove it, for some reason.) Then a couple of errors behind him cost him. Yet, he seemed to shake it all off and get back to the job at hand. Yes, it was just one game, but I was definitely impressed by his poise. I loved Stras, but in his early days, any one of those things would have caused him to fall apart, in contrast to the way Cavalli handled all the distractions.

If he’s getting rattled now by adversity then something has changed.

The difference is your example was not of Cavallis doing. He created the adverse condition by whatever is causing him to melt down.

We were saying the same thing about Gio and Strasburg at this point in their careers.

He's had a grand total of 19 major league starts.

Twins booth crew described him as a 'switch-flipper-pitcher' - one inning he's a Cy Young candidate, another inning he completely loses control. Unfortunately, you never know which you're going to get... ;)
