This is a great deep dive into the incident, including Contreras' veering off path to bump Cavalli at end of the 1st inning, which clearly was what precipitated the later fracas.

Also, the Youtuber does a great job of lip reading and narrating segments so we know exactly what Cavalli was saying, umpires, and Sox manager at various key moments.

Of course everybody heard him, but what makes you think Contreras was aware of the cultural context?  Maybe I missed him somehow reacting in that way, such as "who you calling "boy"".  (I think nested quotation marks work nicely here.   )

So confirmed that Contreras went out of his way to insult & mess with Cavalli first chance he had.  Only a couple days after he (Contreras) had provoked another bench clearing incident.  It's ridiculous that they both get 7 days.  Contreras started it and then escalated it to a physical confrontation.  I suppose that when Contreras advanced towards him, Cade was supposed to run into his locker room and wait till it was safe to come back outside?  It's telling that Cavalli referred over and over again to the 1st inning provocation, leaving no doubt the precipitating incident.

This is just an example of MLB going "Woke" as many on here don't think that Cavallis remark had any racist intent and certainally Contreras never heard it or knew its history. He just reacted to Cavallis jawing at him. I hope the MLBA appeals the suspensions of Cavalli as it is unwarranted and very disappointing.

Contreras has spent half his life playing with guys like Cavalli. He knew. That's why he clarified who Cavalli was talking to and Cavalli doubled down on the "boy" crap.

Mikolas knew what was coming. He was quick out of the dugout and holding Contreras back. Eaton initiated the contact with Mikolas, Mighty Mik just threw him off. Mikolas has the better case on the appeal, he was attacked while breaking up the fight and defended himself.

I will assume that Cavalli just meant it as a put down and not a racial slur.  I’m not sure how this is MLB going woke? Contreras got suspended seven games also which for him as an everyday player is the biggest punishment.  Also I don’t agree with what Slate said but not clear how that is bringing politics into this? Seems if you are crying this is woke then you are bringing politics into this.

Contreras was upset about the night before and maybe also the Venezuela earthquake situation. MLB apparently didn’t see that as an excuse and gave him seven games.

I am absolutely fascinated to hear that some of the younger generation has no idea about the negative connotations of using “boy” to a person of color. Maybe that’s progress that it’s used so infrequently that the racist meaning is being forgotten?


Anyway, I thought Cade’s statement was excellent. He may not have written it all, but it has a ring of genuine feeling behind it, although the final product may have been polished up a bit by the PR folks. At this point t, unless I hear something to the contrary, I’m going to take Cade at his word that he did not have racist intent. And while Contreras is a hothead, I’m going to extend him a bit of grace given the terrible situation in his own country. That said, the Red Sox need to take the situation in hand and put an end to his antics.

I see Contreras appealed his suspension today.  I wonder if Cavalli will too, and settle on a 5 day suspension after his next start to still get one more in before the all star break.

I still feel that the suspensions are disproportinate regardless of position played. Contreras tried to injure Cavalli with a thrown helmet while hitting Chappy. Contreras is a loaded cannon and this will not be his last suspension. What happened in Venezuela has no bearing on what transpired.
MLB has an issue with a paucity of Black players and fans proportinate to their numbers in the overall population.  I think that if they didn't equally suspend Cavalli some fans, commentators and politicians would be screaming how biased the punishments were. So, yes I wholeheartedly believe that MLB took the safest"Woke"route.

smart move would be to make  the start then drop the suspension. He would miss a start against the Yankees but would be available for the second game after the ASB. He'd get a solid 13 day break between starts that way.

He doesn’t get paid while he’s suspended. Appeal it, they’ll knock down to 5 and Cavilli saves 11K in salary.

After pointing out that the Cavalli incident was his 3rd incident in a week (one with the NYY and Will Warren that cleared the benches but no suspensions, the ejection challenging a checked swing, and the Cavalli incident), Contreras apologized for his conduct last week after the Venezuelan earthquakes.

“Those situations could have been avoided and controlled and handled better,” he said through a translator before Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels (via The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey). “It’s been a really tough week, emotional week for me. I hope that they understand how emotional it has been, and I’ll prove myself with my actions on the field from here moving forward and show the kind of person that I truly am.”

Healey said Contreras cried as he apologized, clearly distraught from what he’s dealt with.

Cavalli, who also took time to reflect on what he said during the game that upset Contreras, offered an apology of his own on Friday.

“I have high respect for (Contreras),” Cavalli said. “I wish him the best and I hope that we can just move on from this, and respect each other, and pray over him, and hope that he’s doing okay. … I think he understands that we’re both high competitors and it’s part of what makes us who we are. That’s nothing to shy away from, and we want to do it in a respectful way
