My negative take is that he will not pitch more than 3 innings before he is pulled tonite. I just don’t have confidence in his skill set and this was an act of desperation that will backfire on the organization. It is like what they did to Adon years ago after one initial good start he went on to lose 13 games.

Crochet had 146 innings as a starter with a 3.58 era. He had 2 full years of control left. If cavalli can perform until next years trade deadline while staying healthy, that’ll be the same time as a major league starter as crochet with 2.5 years of control as opposed to 2.

That might be the most spot-on description I've ever heard...a veteran pitcher is gonna chew this kid up and spit him out.

Matthews was highly recommended by Doolittle IIRC, who gave Matthews a lot of credit for resurrecting his career in 2021.

I like that we have a pitching coach who still lives in his parents' basement. I bet he was like "Mr. Hickey, do you have a guy like me who sneaks into camp every year?". Still an upgrade over Hickey either way.

Simon Matthews worked his way up the Reds organization and was promoted to the MB staff by Terry Francona. He maybe young, but he didn't fall by accident into this job.
