He turns 27 this year, and is arb eligible next year.  Can't really take longer.
Lol, what? He has three years left after this season. Plenty of time

Didn't start tonight. Not listed as the starter in Rochester tomorrow.

He hurt again?

Maybe he's the starter for Sunday?

Sunday's starter is TBD. It would be Williams' turn but he would be on short rest. Monday is an off day. They could give Cavalli the start on Sunday and roll into Tuesday with Gore on normal rest. Or they could get everyone an extra day and put Williams or Irvin in the pen after their turn in the rotation

I believe Fangraphs says he is starting Sunday. Saw a post about it on Reddit. Not sure if that’s based on any actual intel.

Zero reason not to cut Williams.   Putting him in the pen does nothing

is it late enough in the year so he misses arbitration next year?

Hes not going to the pen. Hes going to the IL. And he would be a massive improvement over Salazar.

Everyone can dump on me but I believe Cavalli will not be a permanent part of the rotation and will end up as our closer. Unfortunate but he has not progressed enough in his rehab starts to show me he has the stamina to complete 5 or 6 innings and throw a 100 pitches. It shouldnt take this long to prove he is a starter.

He was optioned May 11, so probably needs a few more weeks.

Agree.  He’s a 4 or 5 at best.  Issue is Trevor Williams had the highest ERA among all MLB starters, and the lowest fastball velo.  So it’s a low bar for any pitcher who takes his spot.

They’ll probably wait to manage his service time clock.

They kept him down to keep his service time in check.

it's complex because he got service time while he was on the  MLB IL at the start of the year rather than in the minors.

he had 2 years, 41 days at the start of the year. Optioned on 5/11, so add another 46 days or so, and that 87 days towards his 3rd year. I guess that means about 85 days until he reaches 3 years. call up on sunday gives him 26 days credit for July, 31 for August, and 28 for September if he stays up to the end of the year. To me, that looks like 85 days, so it's touch and go and needs a more precise calculation.

He may not get credit for the day he's sent down, so it might be 171 days, precise.

yes. When i posted the calculation in a comment on TalkNats, someone mentioned he doesn't get credit for 5/11, the day he was sent down.

Serendipitous that Williams got IL'd and will miss his start on Sunday, the precise day Cavalli could be called up.  Makes you wonder if Williams was gutting through a last start or two with a sore arm.

Right. So between that and not pitching for two years explains why they've taken the course of action they did.

Too much of a coincidence.

Question is, who do they turn to when the next arm goes down

I don't know if the timing on leaving Sunday's starter as TBA was before the rainout, meaning it was planned he take the Sunday start all along, or whether it went TBA once there was a rainout and it would be a short rest start for one of the Wednesday pitchers.

as for next arm, it might be Lord, it might be Lara, it might Ogasawara if he figures things out.

Alvarez is probably the next in line unless they decide to move Lord back to the rotation.

I assume Gray will be on a rehab assignment after the ASB and is likely back in August-September as well.
