Knowles uses a four-pitch mix—fastball, cutter, curveball, changeup—providing variety by using two different variations of the changeup. The heater has been sitting 89 to 90 mph so far this season, but Knowles expects it to tick up a few clicks as the weather warms up. He recalls topping out at 93 mph last season.

“It’s the spin,” Knowles said when asked about the difference in his changeups. “If I’m throwing a guy two-seam sinkers, I’m going to try to have the same spin on the ball and throw two-seam changeups, and if I’m throwing four-seam fastballs I want him (the batter) to see the same thing out of my hand so it’s a little tougher to pick up.”

I actually had an indirect email conversation with Darold back in 2005. Someone on the official forum thought they remembered Darold, and other Nats, becoming substitute teachers in the offseason to make a few $. This person remembered Darold at a specific school in PG. I tracked him down where was a coach at some college in Florida, and sent an email to a team administration person who relayed the question on to Darold. Apparently he "doesn't do emails" but he confirmed through the administrator that he had in fact been a teacher at times, though he couldn't remember the specific schools.

They swapped Knowles and LHP Alemao Hernandez. Not sure why.
