Especially since that OPS is propped up by a .400 OBP.   .450 slugging percentage is very pedestrian.

A .450 slugging percentage with a .250 batting average isn't pedestrian, though it's not elite either.

Average slugging is .435. So maybe a bit above pedestrian.

Don't discount the OBP.  He's avoiding outs at a .400+ clip.  That OPS is still outstanding, even with the down slugging.

Yet so few people, even among Washington baseball fans, remember Eddie Yost: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yosted01.shtml

Quote
Known as “The Walking Man” for his propensity at getting bases on balls, he played in more games than any third baseman before him, though he was often overlooked because he spent most of his career in cavernous Griffith Stadium playing for the dreadful Senators.

What's the average BA? His ISO is over .200, which is above average, that's all I was alluding to.

I see all this talk about Soto's slugging, batting average and OBP due to walks but the bottom line is the Padres didn't give up their minor league system for what they're getting. That much is obvious. Somebody asked would we undue the trade if we could. The answer is no.

Watched his first at bat today. Against Castillo who is good but he flailed at a pitch going away from him that was several inches off the plate when it crossed.  He seems befuddled.

Edit. Castillo just made Machado looks silly also.

they note that his slump coincides with him missing time at the end of August with back issues. .120/.313/.180  since August 27. He is hitting pop-ups at a rate never seen before in his career.

If by several, you mean 19

I went through a bunch of HOF players careers to see if I could find one who had an off year after they had started having great years. While it's way too early to say Soto is going to be a HOF player if somebody someday is going to sign him to a half billion-dollar contract, I would think that's the type of player they would expect. There's probably some out there but I really couldn't find one not counting one's who were at the end of their career. My point is over a 162 game schedule historically great players don't fall off so much. That would suggest maybe more is going on with the injury although his year was off before any injury concerns. If he rebounds next year it's possible all the contract and trade talk was the culprit.

It’s not a lot of time that players that start out this strong at this age move teams, for sure

0-2, 2BBs last night.

I still think he's hurt. This kind of drop-off is just too massive to be a slump.

He did take a pretty sharp downturn after sitting out those games.   But if he's hurt badly enough to go 3 for September, he shouldn't be playing.

Padre fans aren't panicking, but there is some uncomfortable shifting and squirming. https://www.reddit.com/r/Padres/comments/xegklm/over_the_past_14_games_juan_soto_is_batting_068/

Its funny how quickly this board went from Soto is literally Ted Williams to Soto peaked in 2020.

Pretty obvious he's hurt and trying to play through it.

Padres lose 4-0 to Arizona. Soto goes 0-4 with 2Ks. He's 1 for his last 29 and 3 for his last 47 (over his last 15 games)

Josh Bell has picked it up a bit but only has a .625 OPS with the Padres.  His free agent stock is dropping also.

As far as the "no-backsies" rule, even with Juan's current slump, I would happily reverse that trade if possible.
Soto hurt his back a few weeks ago and hasn't been the same since, the Padres should have put him on the IL. The back injury occurred around the same time that the Padres had Soto riding a camel during a fan event.

Reverse the trade and have Soto leave the team as a free agent in a couple years or reverse the trade and pay him over $500 million?
