Does that mean he was good earlier last year in ST? It feels like he's struggled with every start so far, though I'm admittedly only following headlines so he maybe had a better start that I'm not remembering now.

Edit: Looking through past comments here I see he had a 3 inning outing where he gave up just 1 earned run, but also only 1 K.

Whatever, it's ST. You have varying levels of talent, tinkering, new rules to adjust to, and all wrapped in a small sample size. I'd prefer if he hadn't gotten rocked yesterday but let's see what happens once the games actually start mattering.

For what it’s worth, Gore struggled late last spring as well. After tossing five scoreless innings in his first two games, he allowed six runs over his final seven innings.

But when the red light turned on for real, Gore rose to the occasion. Over his first nine big league starts for San Diego, he went 4-1 with a 1.50 ERA. Things devolved after that as his elbow began to act up.

Zuck:

MacKenzie Gore vs. a Yankee lineup with several regulars (including Torres, Rizzo, Stanton): 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K, 81 pitches, 55 strikes. First-pitch strikes to 17-of-20 hitters. Fastball was 93-96. By far the best he's looked this spring.

If he was still rookie eligible, I would have predicted him to be in the ROY race.

Galdi and Zuckerman had a nice discussion about Gore on their Nats Chat Podcast.  Cannot find a new Nats Insider podcast.  Latest is October 3, 2022.  Perhaps they are not doing this year?

weird. Why have his breaking ball and Gray's been effective in Coors?

I don't see an agent listed for him. Is he representing himself? Can we extend him soon if so?

Dougherty game story had a lot on Gore's effort last night against the Cubs:

Quote
Entering the week, Gore ranked ninth in the majors in CSW percentage, a stat developed by Pitcher List that measures the rate at which a pitcher generates whiffs and called strikes. At 32.9 percent, considered well above average, Gore was behind Spencer Strider, Jacob deGrom and Clayton Kershaw, among others, and right in front of Shohei Ohtani. That’s impressive company no matter the sample size.
...
Gore had a few bumps in April, too, but ended the month with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings. That jumped to 3.77 on Monday, a product of how quickly numbers change early on. His CSW percentage against the Cubs was just 23 percent. They kept fouling off his four-seam fastball. In turn, his secondary pitchers were less effective.

“We were in the zone. I felt like we threw strikes for the most part,” Gore said. “But the off-speed was not as good tonight. So it just made it where I didn’t have as much to keep guys off balance.”

Also noted this was the point in the year when Gore started to break down last year.

Here's hoping he can repeat yesterday's 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 11 K, 1 BB performance often.

Right now the Soto trade looks fantastic for the Nats. Gore and Wood are living up to expectations, Susana is coming along, but the jury is still out on Abrams and Hassell.
