This feels like a poor idea.

Gore threw 37 pitches in a simulated game yesterday. Teams says if he feels OK after this, he will throw another sim game, and, if he's OK afterward, he will be sent out for a rehab assignment. All of that sounds like they hope to have him start for the big team, and at least once, My own hunch is they want Gore to start at home, the way they started Cavalli.

But that is an awful lot of test-and-if-OK points.

So what is the best case scenario here? He pitches 5-6 innings at the MLB level?

he gets in a solid start before the year ends with no issues and is 100% to start next spring.

Seems there would be time for a couple starts. And at least one at Triple A.

That sounds like Adon last year.  Not so good.

This is entirely different. Adon clearly wasnt ready this year. Gore was okay until he was hurt. Im just wondering why its so important to push this guy back from injury to make, at most, two limited starts in a meaningless season.

Risk doesnt seem worth the reward here.

he was shut down in late July, right, after a stretch of about a month of bad starts?  It's possible this isn't a serious injury, and the psychological value of getting back from it and being normal might help him rather than have it hang over his head in the off-season.  He has had several negatives the past couple of years so maybe there's value in making him feel normal.

Davey did say a potential rehab start if Thursday's bullpen goes well. The Red Wings last game is 9/28, so figure:
9/8 bullpen
9/13 start at Lehigh
9/18 he pitches the final game of the Miami series

I would give him two starts in Triple A and then seems he would still have time for 2 in MLB.  Or just let him finish at Rochester.

When will MacKenzie Gore make his next start? Sunday for Class AAA Rochester. Gore has been recovering from elbow inflammation since July 26, when he was still with the San Diego Padres before he was included in the Juan Soto/Josh Bell trade. The plan is for Gore to make at least one start with the big league team so he can finish this season healthy.

Obviously needs another start.  Nats don't need a 5th starter until 9/20, so he could maybe open for Gray then.

From today's Post:

Quote
How did MacKenzie Gore fare in his first rehab start? He threw 36 pitches over 1⅔ innings for Class AAA Rochester. Martinez said the plan was for Gore to throw three innings and around 45 pitches, so he didn’t reach that goal. He allowed two hits and no runs.

Gore reported that he felt good afterward, Martinez said. He’s slated to throw another bullpen session in Washington before heading out for his next rehab start.

here's more from NationalsProspects.com:
Quote
MacKenzie Gore made his first appearance since July 25 and worked around a leadoff single in the 1st and gave up a two-out double in the 2nd. While he didn’t issue a walk, he struggled with his command, going to a full count on four of six batters to throw 36 pitches, 21 for strikes.

I'm really worried about them rushing him.

The Juan Soto return package makes much more sense if the Nationals medical staff felt confident they could keep him healthy. Rushing him to labor through a short start does not inspire confidence.

Everything about the return for Soto was rushed

I'm not so certain.

- Abrams has not been rushed

- Hassell has not been rushed. Getting a few weeks of Harrisburg, where he can start next year before going to Rochester

- Wood is leaning in Frederixksburg. Not rushed.

- Susana is in Fredericksburg. Not rushed.

We rushed to trade him. There was nothing in this deal that wouldnt have been available in the offseason. Particularly with Gore's elbow injury.

Ownership put a self imposed deadline on this and Rizzo had to basically take the best offer he got, instead of holding out.

We'll go round and round on this, but if Rizzo was truly down on the talent in the NYY system, including their better shortstop prospect, then I don't see a better bidder in the off-season.

Remembering Cecil Fielder and how the Tigers didn’t come into the picture until Victor Martinez went down, it’s after the season when changes in personnel and priorities occur. That in and of itself has the potential to create a market that might not have been visible at the trade deadline, and there’s a much bigger pool that could be involved.

Yup. And if Nationals medical staff was confident on Gore, I'm not certain how someone clearly beats this offer. Unless you have a burning hatred for CJ Abrams ability on the diamond, this is a strong package.

If you don't want to give the Nats medical staff benefit of the doubt, that's probably a smart play. But we won't know for a couple years at least.
