Follow the Prospects: Jarlin Susana, RHP
« Topic Start: August 02, 2022, 05:29:51 PM »
18 years old, signed by the Padres as an international free agent in 2022 for $1.7 million out of the DR. He was the top-ranked international pitching prospect this year.

At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Susana pairs a 96-99 mph fastball with a late-breaking slider, a hammer curve and a hard, sinking change-up, the sort of arsenal that could make him a workhorse in a rotation.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50

The top-ranked pitcher in the 2021-22 international class, Susana signed with the Padres for $1,700,000 on Jan. 15, 2022 out of the Dominican Republic. He made eight appearances for San Diego’s Arizona Complex League affiliate and showed enough promising stuff to become a prospect piece in the Juan Soto Deadline blockbuster trade with the Nationals.

Listed at 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Susana already has a Major League frame and his arsenal gives scouts plenty to dream on. The right-hander can sit in the upper-90s with his fastball and touches triple digits on occasion. He complements that with a mid- to upper-80s slider, his best secondary offering, and a low-80s curveball. The teenager rounds out his repertoire with a developing changeup with late sink.

While Susana has the potential to throw multiple plus pitches in the future, he’ll need to improve his command, a common stage of development for such a young pitcher. With a smooth, repeatable delivery, he will get every opportunity to develop as a starter in his second system with Washington.

44/11 k/bb in 29.1ip with a 2.45 era. .89 whip.

Love the early returns, particularly the whip. Guys with his size and power can struggle to throw strikes early on.

He’s so far away that he is hard to project. The stuff is electric. Really good piece.

Yet another tall, hard throwing righty that the Nationals will fail to develop

TINSTAAPP.  I feel bad for this dude.  He could have been traded somewhere that would have helped him become good.

Please new owners who are totally reading this thread, please please please get real development and analytics people. This arm is too good to waste with the Nats current "development" team.

Galdi and Zuck a few days ago on Nats Chat podcast were thinking out loud if the Nationals should just assume a 100+ flamethrower is unsustainable and rush him through as a bullpen arm to the majors.

Not the worst idea if this team was competing soon.

Not a bad debut: 3.1 IP, 6H, 1ER, 3Ks, 1BBs, allowed a solo HR.  68 pitches, 44 strikes. Ran out of steam in the 4th

If the Nationals in the next two seasons are surprisingly competitive, I endorse this plan.

This guy seems too good to be true. If he somehow stays healthy then the idea he was a 1-on-1 for Bell throw-in is a really great move.

Honestly, Henry and Susana should be viewed as limited number of bullets. Do you want to use them in the minors or in the majors?

Not sure anymore about Henry but prefer that Susana has his inevitable TJS in the minors and then we bring him up with full team control

The Angels sent Ben Joyce straight to AA despite being a third round pick this season, which is another data point on this sort of thing.

Not that he's any authority or anything but Jim Bowden placed Susana at #28 on his top 50 prospect list.

Hassell #7, Wood #18, Green #25, Susana #28, Cavalli #48.
