I go back and forth on this. Yes, if somehow, we're magically competitive, calling up Susana out of the pen should absolutely be on the table.

However, I understand the caution in this. If he finally tears that UCL while on the MLB roster, he gets service time, similar to what happened with Cavalli. That basically means we lost him all next year.
If he blows his arm again, he'll never be more than a reliever. I think he is most likely there anyway.

I agree. But am I willing to risk burning a year or more of service time to find out?

Still, there's a world in 2028 where the bullpen is Sime Jr to Susana to Cruz and I'm just giggling over the thought of three innings of triple digits out of the pen. Especially if its in a world where Josh Hartle and PJ Poulin handle the first six innings and don't crack 91.

Geoff Pontes from BBA was there:
Quote
Jarlin Susana struck out two batters in the first inning here in Hudson Valley.

He sat 101-103 mph, had one two-seamer at 103 mph w/ 20 inches of run.

Threw one sweeper at 89 mph w/ 15 inches of horizontal.

P.S. This gun is 8 years old and I’ve never gotten 103 mph before.

https://www.federalbaseball.com/washington-nationals-prospects/93387/nationals-pitching-prospect-jarlin-susana-came-back-with-bang-debut

looks like falls off to the 1B side to get his arm up over the ball which gives him that insane movement but is maybe hard to repeat. would be interesting to see him in AAA so we could see how his release point varies in statcast, and of course to see the full power of his stuff.

loved the video in the article from when he struck out 13 in 5 innings last August, truly unhittable stuff. if i were in the batters box i'd just keep the bat on my shoulder and pray for a walk.

From Longenhagen's chat:

Quote
1:04
lmb2020: Who will we see in the wave of “retains rookie eligibility for next year” callups coming soon?

1:08
Eric A Longenhagen: Gage Wood, maybe Arias/Jenkins/Kade but only once the playoff picture crystalizes a bit more for their teams. Susana, too. If WSH is in it late, that guy’s coming up in the bullpen I think. There are versions of Mariners call ups where they fall out of it and Arroyo/Laz come up to get some run. Brayden Taylor, Khristian Curtis… there’ll be a bunch of dudes.

Longenhagen still in love . . . with the slider:
Quote
12:22
Honkus Wagner: have you seen any of Jarlin Susana since he’s been back? anything of note that’s caught your attention?

12:25
Eric A Longenhagen: 99-103, slider 86-89 with 3,000 rpm on average. Nutty, cartoonish stuff.

The Juan and Only Soto: Any early feedback on how Susana has looked so far? Is it worth sending him (and Sykora, if ready) to fall league or better to just save the mileage on their arms given the injury histories?

12:55
Eric A Longenhagen: There is no way for me to answer that question in an unbiased way, but yeah I think AZ makes a ton of sense. From what I was told there were players in that clubhouse who were advocating for Susana to break camp with them *this year*, then he got hurt. However they think he can best be set up to debut next year they should do.

Law after seeing Susana pitch:
Quote
“Jarlin Susana sat 99-101, topping out at 101.6 mph, and he threw a handful of vicious sliders at 87-88, firing them at the back feet of some left-handed hitters to generate helpless swings. He still has no third pitch at all, and the delivery still puts a lot of stress on the shoulder, both of which point to a more likely future in the bullpen.”

“The stuff is wow, and he could just miss enough bats to stick around as a twice-through-the-order starter even with fringy command and nothing for lefties.”

There's a world where Cavalli starts a game and has the lowest average fastball velocity of the game. Cavalli to Tolman to Sime to Susana

Let's see if he can develop a usable change up or another 3rd pitch. I imagine he was more concerned with just pitching in games than developing a new pitch this season

Let's not. Let's get as much MLB time out of him as we can, when we actually need it (which should be next year).

I will guess he is going to work on a 3d pitch this winter. Or maybe not. Let's see how he looks in the spring.
