Insane move for the Padres to give up a high ceiling SS with team control for a position limited streaky hitter with contract questions!

Moved the discussion of House and where he'll play when he's in the majors to the House Farm thread.

starts around reply#127.

CJ went 3-5 in the first game of today’s double header. Average up to .250 on the year.

Abrams makes a lot of slick plays. His throwing will improve. He's a keeper.

He certainly is. It’s important to note how young he is (younger than Wander Franco), and also point out that he has the type of frame that typically develops a bit more slowly than say the stocky frame Franco has. He’ll get stronger and if he does impact the baseball more forcefully in a year or two, he still retains star upside imo.

Very reassuring past month. The ceiling is so high.

Let’s see how league better adjusts to him next year.

Hopefully he'll walk more in the future. In 155 plate appearances for the Nats he's only walked once.

From the Nationals Twitter
Quote
CJ Abrams since September 3:

.320 AVG (2nd among NL rookies)
13 R
6 2B
2 3B
7 RBI
4 SB
He's cooled off a bit, but since Slate on 9/12 said his ceiling was DSG, he has slaged .284/.294/.388. Not great, and still if his glove and baserunning progresses as expected, that's a guy who will help you win a lot of games.

Talk Nats @TalkNats

Of the 69 qualified rookies in 2022, @CJAbrams01 had the 6th best K-rate at only 16.6%. Abrams did this as a 21 year old shortstop while facing some of the best pitchers in MLB. In his final 28 games of 2022, Abrams batted .314 for #Nats. Future🌟

I don’t think he’ll ever be in the elite SS convo, but he will be an important piece for a long time. The defense alone will be nice.

If he's merely solid that will go a long way.

Padres need to stop trading short stops to Washington.

One Spring Training game in and I need to figure out if my prediction for him is just being the Nationals 1 ASG selection or if he is full Gold Glove and deserving All Star

Golden, from today's Svrluga chat, on encouraging observations so far this spring:

Quote
CJ Abrams has come into this camp looking stronger; he said he added about six pounds this offseason. He also seems to have a better approach at the plate after spending the offseason working on his stride when he swings. Last season, hitting coach Darnell Coles mentioned that he felt like Abrams was jumping at balls instead of letting the ball come to him. In batting practice, he's hitting more line drives and staying back, which is encouraging.
