He's been alternating very nice with quite shaky starts so far this year.  In his 3 good starts, he's gone 16 innings, allowing 10 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned, with 3 walks, 25 Ks, and 1 HR. In his two bad starts, he's gone 5.1 IP, 8 H, 11 R, 4 ER, with 3 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks, and 1 HR.

He pretty much needs to K people to avoid being hurt by the butchers behind him. Drawing lots of groundballs when he does generate contact (GO/AO 2.00). High BABIP against (.340) backs up the idea he's been damaged by his fielder. FIP likes him, RA9 doesn't. I'll go with FIP. Lots to be pleased about.

Needs to be promoted.  He’s not being challenged right now

Bennett. Now is the time to go all-in on Jakes.  Just need Noll to get healthy.

Can someone with more expertise explain why we would not skip Wilmington and go straight to Harrisburg for Jake? It seems like Fredericksburg is not a challenge for him, and I know we always say nothing really matters until guys perform at AA. Is Wilmington that different from Fredericksburg?

Because it's a huge jump in talent. It was reported that he was a strike thrower, so he do very well at the lower levels right away. That appears to be the case so far. But he needs to refine his slider, according to reports. I remember around the draft, he had some helium because it was more consistent. I've only seen a few  innings this year, so I cant say I've seen anything. But hitters in low A aren't going to capitalize on mistakes or pitches in the zone as much as AA hitters are. Working on refining the pitches to keep guys off balance at the lower levels is "easier" than the higher levels. If that slider has become consistent, and that velo stays more mid 90's than low, he's going to move fast. But I dont see any reason to skip Wilmington altogether. He may only be in A- for another week or two, then hit Wilmington. His success there will dictate how long he stays there.

Maybe it’s the pitch speed gun but not seeing anything above 90.

whatever he's doing, it's working. 2H, 5Ks, 0ER in 2IP.

Has good breaking stuff.  Just will be hard for him to progress very far without a mid 90s fastball.  Other than Susanna do we have any hard throwers?

i wonder if it's the gun, here's his scouting report:

Quote
The left-hander is a backwards-split guy because of a 82-85 mph tumbling changeup that can absolutely befuddle righties. He typically sits around 91-94 mph with a heater and is capable of touching 98 when he really rears back. The pitch plays up some because of his size and extension, and typical of the modern game, it’s at its best when he climbs the ladder. An inconsistent low-80s slider hurts him against lefties, but there’s some flashes of promise with its sweep across the zone.

Rutledge, Henry, and Lara all are mid-to-upper 90's pitchers as well. Brzykcy was upper 90's before TJ at least

Only an 8 inning game? Rain?

Will be a reason to go to Wilmington for a cheese steak at the Claymont steak shop and then to some games.

Needs to be promoted yesterday.  Unless they have something really specific they want him to work on that he hasn’t mastered yet.  But even then he should go up so he can be challenged

Awesome for Jake, well deserved. Hope this means he is taking Saenz spot in Wilmington and Saenz is moving up to Harrisburg.
