hit another HR (and a two-run double) in his final FCL game, finishes at .302/.404/.535. Only Holliday put up a better line

Profile by Andrew Golden of his development days.  Working out with his Dad, developing a reputation for elite speed in in his early teens, the attention at tournaments, work ethic inspiring teammates, ...

speed
Quote
Green’s speed was notable as a high school freshman. Brian Martinez, his coach during his freshman and sophomore years at TNXL Academy, said “the ground shakes” when Green runs.

“If he focused on track, and that was something that he really wanted to take serious, I truly believe that he could be an Olympic track athlete for the USA,” Brooks said. “He possesses that kind of speed.”

celebrity
Quote
“We’d walk into places and little kids are asking him for his autographs when he’s 16 years old,” Martinez said. “He’s kind of a celebrity — everybody talked about him since he was young. So I’ve never seen the hype that a person’s gotten like him.”

The attention wasn’t just in Florida. Video of Green playing summer ball hit social media as his star continued to rise. After a strong sophomore summer, Green jumped to the top of the rankings for his draft class. He left for IMG Academy, an elite sports academy in Bradenton, Fla., ahead of his junior year.

Dan Simonds, director of baseball at IMG Academy, said traveling with Green was like traveling with “a member of the Beatles.”

work ethic

Quote
“Even in the minors, you really don’t have guys who come up to the plate and they have built such a reputation around themselves with how good they are that people get excited when they strike out,” said Diamyn Hall, a leadership coach at IMG. “So this is an 18-year-old who was experiencing this, and he handled it like a professional.”

Green hit .462 with a 1.592 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, recording nine home runs and 32 RBI in 25 games during his senior year. He became more vocal too, his father said. He picked his teammates up when they were down after bad plays and offered tips to them during practice.

Simonds said Green’s teammates took to that work ethic and tried to follow in his footsteps. Green often would take swings in the batting cage after practice, and slowly the coaches noticed how his teammates would show up to work after hours, too.

Rated by BA as the #4 prospect in the Florida Complex League.

Highlights:

-Showed an explosive skill set in the FCL.
-Big-time power - 6 of 13 hits for extra bases, including 2 HR.
-Run times of 4.1 or better.
-Played CF well enough to stick there

.302/.404/.535 with 40% K rate.

If he can hone his approach, has a good chance of reaching his sky high ceiling

-BA print edition

Not to be a complete jerk, but he was the #5 pick. He probably should be top 10 in the complex league.

A CF who hits homers and is lightning fast. Is Greene the next Mickey Mantle?

What’s causing the swing-and-miss? Green’s swing is simple and direct, and he doesn’t have an elaborate leg kick (he barely has a stride) or a complicated load; he just tends to swing inside fastballs on the outer third and expand the zone a little bit against fastballs up. He is otherwise incredibly gifted, a 70 runner with at least 70 raw power that plays to all fields. His long speed gives him a shot to stay in center field, but his routes to balls can be a bit of an adventure. He wasn’t considered a lock to stay there before the draft, and pro scouts came away skeptical of his defense in center from Green’s post-draft look. His frame makes him pretty likely to slow down with age, but as he fills out he’ll probably grow into elite raw power. If he develops even a 40-grade hit tool, he’ll hit 30 annual bombs and it won’t matter where he plays.

You can convince me Elijah Green is a lock to be a future All Star as easily as you can convince me he'll put up absurd number in Fredericksburg and Wilmington before living under the Mendoza line in Harrisburg.

Mendoza line or a season ending injury in June.

I don't believe in the metaphysical, but I still wish you wouldn't say things like that.  :hysterical:
