Follow the Prospects: Jake Alu, 3B
« Topic Start: July 08, 2022, 01:57:02 PM »
Jake Alu
Team: Harrisburg Senators
Position: 3B   Age: 25 DOB: 04/06/1997
Bats: L Throws: R   Height: 5' 10" Weight: 180 lb.
Drafted by WAS in 24th round of the 2019 MLB Draft - Boston College
Fan Graphs - #16 player in Nationals Farm System
Hit        Game Power   Raw Power  Speed     Field       FV
50 / 55   35 / 40   45 / 45   40 / 40   40 / 45   40

Alu has flown under the radar since being drafted late out of college in the 2019 draft. Hit .257 in Fredericksburg in his rookie year before missing 2020 due to Covid.

Made his way up to AA in 2021 after hitting .303 in Wilmington to start the year.

2022 - .272/.354/.457 8 HR 25 2B 35 RBI 56 strikeouts in 276 AB with 32 BB

Seems like a guy who may get a surprising call if the Nationals move Franco at the deadline.

.281/.360/.470 9 HR 25 2B 36 RBI 9 SB at Harrisburg.

Put up very solid numbers coming off the Covid pause in 2021 in Wilmington and Harrisburg . I expect we see him up after the sell-off to see if he is a future option at 3B.

#16 on the FG rankings.

Quote
Alu can hit, and the former senior sign out of Boston College is making a push for a 40-man spot next year. The short-levered Alu can let the baseball travel deep before he decides to swing, and after taking a more proactive approach early in his pro career, his walk rates have skyrocketed in 2022. Even if that’s a small sample blip and due for a regression (he does swing over top of breakers fairly often), there are still hitterish elements here. Alu can put the barrel on pitches all over the zone, he pokes stuff on the outer third to left field and can double into the gap that way, and he has enough raw power to be dangerous when he opens his hips to turn on inside pitches. Without big power, Alu isn’t a fit as an everyday third baseman; instead, he could be a good part-time role player at a couple of different spots. While he’s moonlighted at second base and in left field a little bit, he hasn’t been seen enough at either spot to know how he’d play either position. If he can incorporate defensive versatility into his game, Alu will have a consistent place on a big league roster.

Best tool is his hit (50/55).  Rest (power, run, field, throw) are fringey (40-45).

Hit his third HR since moving up to Rochester last night. .235/.303/.412 in 19 games since getting to Rochester. Hasn't committed an error in 18 games at 3B and has been pretty consistent there over the years.

He hasn't shown much, but he's shown me exactly enough to want to DFA Franco (or catapult him to the moon) and call Alu up.

At this point I'd rather see a guy who may be a nobody (but has a 5% chance of being a MLB guy) instead of Franco out there.

He can't be worse than Franco. Don't call him up so early that he screws up his approach trying to adjust to MLB pitching, but if he hits 100 ABs and has a passable OPS, call him up. Abrams, Alu, and Garcia would be a fun IF down the stretch.

Exactly. I would say get Noll up and stick him at 3B, but it looks like he's been playing only 2B and 1B in Rochester this year. Doesn't mean we can't just have him up instead, but there is simply no reason to trot Franco out there for another day.

The Nats don't need Franco. The team doesn't need Cruz except for the "veteran clubhouse presence".

Cruz taking ABs from a potential Noll/Adams/Meneses/Call group at LF/1B/DH is just silly and Franco still being up is just as bad.

2-4 with his 4th HR yesterday now sitting at .265/.323/.458 --  meanwhile Franco is slashing .159/.196/.243 in his last 30 games with 3 HR and 1 multi-hit game.

It's still early in AAA for him. Under 100 ABs. They may want to make sure he is okay there before they bring him up and ruin the good feelings by overwhelming him with MLB pitching.

Behind CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia, this is a very sad system in the IF. Jake Alu has played some 2B. Not certain he needs to play every day as a college draftee who is 25. He could come up next year as a backup infielder who gets a run if Kieboom isn't ready.

For all the 'we can't develop any players' talk, getting Alu, a 24th round draft pick, to the majors would be a heck of a feather in the cap.

When does he have to be added to the 40 man roster?  I think he gets another year?  If he had to be added, then I'd definitely see him come up at the end of the year.  If not, then I could see him just finishing out the year at Rochester and being invited to next year's spring training.

Give Kieboom or an FA a run at 3rd, then if Alu does well in Rochester and Kieboom Kiebusts, swap them at some point in 2023.

I know you're right, I just loathe Maikel Franco and can't stand to see him in another lineup card.

He'd have to be added.  2019 college draftees are eligible this season despite the loss of the 2020 season.  Combined between there being no MLB Rule 5 last year and the roster crunch caused by the lost season, this could be a bumper crop of Rule 5s.  Good season to have the top pick.

then the 2019 draftees I think will be among the call ups in September if they are in the running not to be exposed in rule 5.  Rutledge might be the exception.  At this point, this guy might be as likely to pan out as CK, especially with his arm injury on top of past flailing in the majors.

Dangerous, because they need to go on the 40 to be called up, meaning you'd need to DFA them if you wanted to expose them.  And that puts them through waivers even before the Rule 5.

you'd only do it if you have already made the decision you were not going to expose them.  I've built that in for both Cronin and Alu. Cronin would be easy to hide on an MLB roster for a year, and Alu has probably shown enough at AA and AAA to make him a guy who might get taken were he left off the 40 man.  Like I said, he may deserve an equal shot at the 3rd base spot along with Kieboom at this point.

Bit different than "in the running," but yes, it makes sense in this post.

Alu has produced at every level so far. Not a ton of power but not devoid of it either and still developing. He could be the guy to help this team at 3b if Kieboom falls flat again.

Really would have liked to see him called up but difficult to bench Vargas right now. He’s having a really good year at AAA.

play Vargas at short
:couch:

What I'd say is, if the plan is to give Adams or Ruiz at bats in positions other than catcher, then the Barrera call up makes sense.  The only other argument against an Alu call up is 40 man roster management.  If he's not going to be added after the season, then it doesn't make sense to add him now, and even if he is going to be added, they may not want to be schmucks and DFA a guy like Cesar or Boomstick at this point.  I'm sure neither the Clippard or Franco decisions were happy times.
