The App State win is solid but winning 4 games against bad teams is whatever. The entire ACC is propped up by preseason rankings and wins over bad teams, as always. MD has played Michigan (top 5) and Purdue (top 25/30), at least.

Virginia Tech is probably done as a football program if we're being honest. Their only hope is by some miracle the Big Ten or SEC decide to throw them a liferaft. They can enjoy the minor leagues (Big 12/AAC) one day, though.

To be fair, Michigan has surpassed Norte Dame as the most overrated and over-ranked team in CFB. No one wants to admit that the Big10 is a one team conference, so Michigan and Penn State get every benefit of the doubt. Hopefully USC becomes that second team and Michigan can fade away again

Nah, they're close enough to taken they can make it work with the right admin support and coach. maybe not perennially anymore, but more often than not is possible.

Making it work in the minor leagues is not the same as making it work long-term at an actual competitive level. They could compete in the Big 12, sure, but once they're officially in the minor leagues recruiting will be significantly harder. Maryland stands to make $60-70 million more, per year, than VT. They'll be picked apart by Big Ten/SEC schools for any good players using NIL deals. There are going to be haves and have-nots, an VT offers nothing to either conference unless Greg Sankey decides to be really generous.

Shame because Enter Sandman is awesome.

agreed UM is overrated as hell but still a top 15-20 team. Only a couple teams look actually dominant this year.

Fair take. The AD has done a good job with his basketball and baseball hires. Missed the bot with Fuente. Too early to judge the new guy. They might be a bit better if Hendon Hooker was tossing touchdowns for them rather than Tennessee.

They going to stay in the ACC? That'll still be a power conference with an auto-berth into the playoff. SEC and B1G will have the upper hand for the foreseeable future, but ACC and B12 will still be players. All about the admin and coaching staff. VT will still be a place that can win. ACC will be pretty volatile in who wins that conference each year. No reason the Hokies can't be a part of that chaos.

Why would the ACC get an auto-bid for the playoff once Clemson, Miami, FSU and UNC leave? Seems absurd to think a conference of UVA/VT/BC/NC ST/WAKE/DUKE deserves a playoff bid. The Big 12 has legit football schools in it, at least. The carcass of the ACC will be made up of what are now Sunbelt teams.

An ACC school getting $50 million less a year than their competitors is not one I would expect to be a "player." Maybe they can be a player in whatever the ACC ends up being, or join the Big 12, but unless they somehow discover the next Beamer AND the next Vick AND keep them all it seems like a big-time stretch. They haven't had a top-25 recruiting class since 2018 and anecdotally, their power in the 757 is at an all-time low, and the future of big-time college football has them on the outside looking in.

Where are all those schools going to go? The next move here, or one of the next is to four super conferences forming their own thing. Va Tech will be part of the mix. VT may be down now, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion they're condemned to be there forever.

You're right about the ACC, though. That's a terrible media deal, which puts them at a terrible disadvantage.

They’re the second school in a midsize state that barely cares about football.

First school for football is JMU.  Right?

No one really know what is going to happen and the other sports have an impact also.  Once these conferences get so big they lose their identity also.  At a certain time teams are going to realize that they will never escape the second division.

I’m sure Maryland is happy to never compete as long as the checks come on time

Football is really the only sport driving this at every school except Kansas, UNC and Duke. The conferences have already lost their identities.

I'd rather be locked into a future in college athletics than be stuck holding an empty bowl at the AAC table, yeah. Big Ten move secured MD in basketball, too.

Also there's a world where MD goes 9-4 this year after 7-6 last year which I'll take considering it's been 10 years since we did anything.

I honestly think Maryland would have beaten Michigan in 2020 had that game not been cancelled for whatever reason. Harbaugh might well have been fired if that game had been played.

I barely remember what I was doing the third Saturday of October in 2006. Certainly not watching Alabama-Tennessee as that would not have been a marquee matchup at the time.

Bryce Young may have actually boosted his Heisman chances in this loss (look at his stats) but Hendon Hooker was ice cold with 30 seconds left in the 4th quarter.

#25 JMU loses to Georgia Southern. GS QB threw for around 570 yards. They ran for around 20.

Virginia Tech just a good AD and coach away, you guys. Definitely not circling the drain.

One day the Terps will put it all together and finish top 5 in their conference
