Maybe the Big Ten should be called the Union Conference and the SEC the Confederacy Conference. Their champions meet in a one-game playoff called the War Between the States by the Confederacy Conference and the Civil War by the Union Conference.

So much for their anti SEC non-poaching alliance

It’s final.  And I don’t think this is the last domino to fall.

Big 10 told Oregon and Washington no. ND is mulling things over and will need a companion- Stanford seems like the best choice given media markets

What's the next date on which Scott Frost's buyout drops? I think that's also his last day as the head coach in Lincoln.

The University Hawaii on campus facility actually looks very nice.  Only about 10,000 seats I believe while they wait a few years for a new stadium.

12 school playoff, the most important regular season in sports now means a whole lot less

At first blush, I love the new 12-team playoff format. Some points:

(1) The fact that the same 4 teams made the playoffs every year was great if you were an Alabama, Georgia, or OSU fan but sucked for everyone else. We all know that one of those three teams is going to win the national title every year, but now dozens of other teams have "playoff appearance" as a tangible goal they can work towards and that their fans can celebrate for a few weeks. It will keep fans of less-elite programs engaged for longer.

(2) More things will get decided by players playing it out on the field now, fewer things by secret committees. Obviously rankings will still be done by secret committees but now teams like that undefeated UCF team coached by Scott Frost will probably get into the playoffs and we won't have endless arguments about what would have happened or not happened.

(3) Less of an incentive for elite teams to play a cupcake schedule. Now a random loss won't totally derail your season.

(4) More of an incentive for Notre Dame to join a conference, as otherwise they will at best be a #5 seed. The year that Notre Dame was in the ACC was totally awesome. Yes they can still play Navy and USC as out-of-conference games.

(5) Home playoff games, maybe. The top-seeded teams in the first round will get to either play home playoff games or designate a neutral site. Maybe they will all pick the nearest NFL stadium to max out revenue, but home playoff games would be lit.

(6) The regular season still matters because there are way more than 12 teams in college football - it especially matters for the non-conference champs. It makes conference championships and thus conference games more meaningful, in fact, as before a bad team winning its conference in a cinderalla game was sent to a crappy bowl game, now they will get sent to the playoffs.

The NCAA tournament got more popular as it expanded. Of course some of that popularity is at the expense of the regular season and the conference tourneys. Time moves on. It’s all about generating more revenue.

One loss derailing a season is one of the things that made college football great. Every rivalry game also had the atmosphere of a playoff game if either team had aspirations that year. Now a two loss SEC or Big10 team still has a chance of getting voted in

College football is garbage.  It should be a 16 team playoff.  Every conference winner gets in.  It is the only college sport, including the lower three levels of football, that does not include every conference winner in the playoffs.   The ONLY one

True. But there is a bigger gap between the top conferences and bottom ones.  In any event more teams in is a good idea.

It’s a crappier version of the NFL. Every change from devaluing bowls to getting rid of conferences that make geographic sense to expanding the playoffs just makes it worse.

In most of these places there is nothing else to do so fans still show up for the games.  Not sure how the TV ratings are faring.

Hokies choked again last night.  Just gave that game away.  Good win for ODU.

William and Mary with the upset over UNC Charlotte!!

Lots of interesting games this weekend.

W&M should be decent this year, and with JMU out of the way they have a chance at a division title.

I was at the W&M vs JMU game last year at W&M. After a JMU score the JMU cheerleaders ran by the W&M student section with the JMU flag, triggering that chant from the W&M students.
