Nationals All Stars - 2022
« Topic Start: June 22, 2022, 12:44:26 PM »
Current voting:
- Josh Bell - 65,731 (9th among 1B)
- Nelson Cruz - 114,806 (7th among DH)
- Juan Soto - 451,079 (5th among OF)

Right now only Soto would make it as the top 6 OF's qualify.

They're 25-46. Soto is more than enough for a team that bad

Soto getting 400,000+ votes by virtue of.name recognition....stupid. Bell's the only one who deserves to go but he won't.

Name recognition is earned, too. It’s the all star game. Not the all most deserving go from just this year game. Soto is a star.

"all most deserving go from just this year game."

By definition, that's EXACTLY what the all star game is intended to be!

Respectfully, it's not just that. It's a lot more than that. It's intended to showcase the stars of the game. If a big star is having a down year, the people still want to see him on the field. People attending the game will want to see Soto there. I know I would, even if I wasn't a Nats fan. FOX will want Soto there. Baseball will want him there. There aren't many players that fit that bill, but he's one of them.

I tend to agree with you on this. I wouldn't mind seeing a series that was the best of the NL vs the best of the AL, by pure positional rankings after the World Series completed (since getting an injury before the series would be devastating), but the 'Star' in All Star isn't the same as 'the Best.' The entire All Star festivities, including the HR Derby, are about putting the camera on the folks people tune in to see. I think it's good for the sport to have an All Star game that people are more likely to watch based on those names.

I also think that having that post WS game or series with the best folks at each position, irrespective of name recognition, would be a great treat for the folks who watch baseball day in, day out, and appreciate watching the talents of folks who may not be household names get their chance to shine.

People attending the game will want to see Soto fly out to right field and ground out to second base.

Fixed!

By 7/19 he ought to be below the Mendoza Line by a few % points.

problem for soto is that he peaked when he put the HR on the train tracks at Minute Maid park, it's all downhill ever since.

Didn't he rake though after his last time competing in the HR derby?

Ok, so...by some of the reasoning above, an all star in any given season doesn't have to actually earn the title *all star*. He just has to have star power that carries over based upon past performance and his popularity, correct?
Let me ask you a question - If managers still picked the all star teams, do you suppose that Soto would make it aboard despite his anemic 2022? Do you think Snitker would rather have Soto over some other player who isn't in a 3 month slump, given the fact the outcome of the game means home field advantage in the WS and his  Braves stand a decent chance to return to it this year? I bet not, and you probably do too. And if the Nats were contending, well.....I guarantee not.

All Star games are kind of dumb. Why is the first half of the season more important than the second half??  I mean Harper didn’t make it last year and then was voted MVP. They should just get rid of it. The game is now secondary to the other events anyway.

I don't hate the ASG, it's a fun night to see the best of the best, i don't take it seriously.

ASG was special before interleague play. Other than the Series, it was the only time we saw guys like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Ernie Banks. Now?

Well, not exactly.  We had the NBC Game Of The Week on Saturday afternoons. They did a pretty good job of spotlighting games that involved stars and contenders in both leagues. Now people can watch every game every day if they're so inclined. Pretty amazing.

They might have been on the game of the week but I don’t ever recall seeing the Senators play as a kid.

Me too. Not once. Because the Senators were awful (except for 1969) and never in contention.

By definition, that's EXACTLY what the all star game is intended to be!
Where is that definition?  Serious question.  Is there even a definition?  When I was a kid, the "definition" (if there was one) was best players from the second half of previous season together with best from current season.  Even then, the "greats" would be selected, even those with poor current and previous seasons.  Mantle was selected both of his last two seasons when he stunk.

Furthermore, in those old days, players took pride in their league and wanted to win the all star game, so theoretically it was more important then that the better players be selected.  Today they couldn't care less, so what does it matter if the best players go?

Still, I  agree with those who say Bell should be the only one from the Nats. Or rather, that's what I'd say if I cared.
