But isn't next year's draft a lottery? Finishing with the worst record doesn't guarantee first pick anymore.

even if we got #1, scouting EXPERT mike rizzo would probably use it on a 24-year-old college junior who hit .290

I believe the worst three teams have an equal chance at number one. A second or third pick is fine also.

I heard the previous top prospect for the draft blew out his arm and has to have TJ surgery. I guess this time we won't be lucky enough to have a Harper or Strasburg to draft.

Check in with the Braves and Phillies about the 2016 draft.

It's pretty much all hitters at the top this year.  Doesn't matter, though: just draft the best player available.  Positions often don't stick anyway.

There's no Harper or Strasburg in this draft. I'm not too concerned about where we are in the top 5. Honestly wouldn't be one bit displeased if we got competitive down the stretch and moved out of the Top 5.

I'd love a big time college arm, but not many of those in this draft. If they miss on Kevin Parada's bat, I say draft the highest upside high schooler and hope for the best.

I'm not a huge fan of high school hitters that high except if you think they can stick at a premium defensive position.  The transition to wood bats and dudes who have multiple refined pitches is just too steep to be comfortably projectable without surefire defensive value.  College hitters take a lot of that risk out via better competition and summer wood bat leagues.

Also, you're talking 2022 prospects, whereas this season affects 2023 draft order.

Who? Crews is the presumptive 1-1 as far as I've seen.

Anyway, as best I can tell 2023 looks deep. Some great SEC position players and lots of college arms. It's a bit early to judge how the high schoolers will fall, but love the sound of the two outfielders at the top (Jenkins, Clark). I haven't seen much buzz on any arms except the current top HS arm (White), but have been pretty focused on 2022, lol.

I definitely let my thoughts drift to the 2022 draft.

I still don't think there is a generational guy in the 2023 draft like we had with Harper and Strasburg. So my thoughts stand that I wouldn't mind a competitive run at the end of the season that pushes us down the board.

Reds are worse, at least until the Nats have the next sell-off for this year's versions of Jordy Barley and Donavan Casey.

Nats are .500 in June.  The tankathon is going off the rails.

Getting swept in a 5 game series against Philly should put us back into the mix for #1

Among the 23 win teams, we've banked 2 or 3 more losses.

Very well played. After things clearly went to hell following the run to a title the next best thing was to blow it up, you can see what happens w/the wiz or redskins when a team lives in denial and tries to perpetually build through short cuts (in fairness, the caps are screwing it up the same way, but at least they managed to win a Cup along the way).

I have to say I'm pretty much pleased as punch w/how they handled things following the title in '19. Once it became clear it was hopeless they blew up the roster at the deadline last year, earned themselves a great draft pick two years in a row ('21 and '22 classes) and probably in '23 as well (looks likely to be top 5 or so for now with #1 overall potential), and began the process to restock a completely bone dry farm system immediately rather than coasting through years of denial.

Yep, it sucks now, but the approach they've used gives us a chance to turn this around in a couple of years, rather than float around in irrelevancy for decades on end like the Wiz, or Redskins/WFT/etc.

I couldn't be more down on "arms." Given the "health" history of pitchers today -- unless you luck out and get a throwback like Max -- I'd much rather throw my multi-millions at everyday position players who have shown the ability to make contact.
