Finnegan and Rainey
« Topic Start: May 25, 2022, 07:09:49 PM »
Both Finnegan and Rainey aren't free agents until 2026. They were both a little shaky today but both throw upper 90's with stuff. It would be nice to have stability at the backend of the pen for the next few years.

It's the beginnings of a nice bullpen, I really like both guys as high leverage power arms. I could see Adon moving back there and Cronin coming up soon. I personally have always wanted to see Joe Ross in the pen, but I understand his value as a starter.

Davey seems to be inclined to spot Rainey in against the heart of the order in the 8th and let Cishek or Arano close. With Edwards and Cishek, he seems to be a bit flexible in who pitches late for the last 9-12 outs.

This is the way it should be. Highest leverage situations should be for your best guy regardless of inning.

Davey is a mix of styles. I think Soto hitting second or Schwarber leadoff last year is more his stats side, but the refusal to use openers before long guys is old school

you want Finnegan to get Ks, but he wasn't exactly rocked. Lot of defensive contact bleeding through against the shift. Give him a day off, then use him as your 6th or 7th inning guy, with Edwards facing the better hitters and Cishek and Rainey at the end.

Finnegan right now can pitch tied or close behind in the middle innings.

Finnegan has been used a lot this past week. He could probably use a few days off.

Never compliment a reliever. It always turns out poorly.

Finnegan is not a late inning reliever. They need to stop using him like one

If they were trying to win games that would make sense.

It is tough to win when an incompetent umpire such as Laz Diaz is behind the plate.  He missed the third base touch of the ball by the ranger’s third baseman (also missed by the third base umpire), and he also made a horrific strike call on I think was a 2-1 count when we had men on first and second., where the ball was about 6 inches inside.

That bum should never have been a major league umpire.

Thankfully , we are crap, so such losses can be taken in stride, but still …:

While they still have Edwards, he should be higher leverage. Also, besides Edwards blowing away the side in the 8th on 6 pitches, the stretch in the order that was coming up in the 9th was the same hitters that Finnegan faced the prior night. IOW, they were familiar with Finnegan. It was like 2nd time through the order with a guy who is not starter quality. Just a hard to stomach call. I am not as far as Slate, but today was a questionable call from the get go, and said so upfront

Thats completely irrelvant to Finnegan giving up a home run. Garcia couldnt do crap with Finn's fastball up in the zone.

The numbers are clear. Finnegan cant be given high leverage situations. He's middle relief. Good middle relief, but middle relief all the same.

I was just venting , and did not want to create a new thread about how bad Laz Diaz is.

Neither Finnegan nor Rainey are end-of-game pitchers.

Let’s be honest. Relievers are often like hockey goalies. It’s voodoo. They go up and down from year to year. Not unexpected from guys who mostly washed out as starters.

You would not want to go with Finnegan and Rainey as your late inning guys as a contender. But the team is nowhere near that. So let them get the experience. And see what you got. Just like letting Garcia play through his defensive problems.

I'm with you.  Judiciously use Carl Jr. and Cishek while they are here, see if the internal guys develop.  Hope you can trade Carl Jr. and Cishek, then mix in Arano and Clippard when they are gone.

Cishek is cooked. I'd move him for a sandwich. Still think Clippard should be up here

I’m very confused that he is not up by now. I would think they would want him to pitch in MLB and get anything they can for him. Unless he just told them he wants to finish out the season and career as a Nat.
