The Rotation - 2022
« Topic Start: April 10, 2022, 06:29:36 PM »
With Anibal out on Tuesday, Aaron Sanchez is the likely candidate. He started on Wednesday at Rochester and went 4, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits with a walk and 4 Ks. Cavalli threw on Thursday so he wouldn't be ready.

Also Rogers is a candidate.

With Sanchez going 4 and giving up 2 his first start, he fits the profile.

Espino is already on the roster and threw 2 1/3 in Game 2. If Anibal is just day-to-day and they don't want to make a roster move, he's also a candidate.

Some speculation about who starts on Wednesday, 6/1, when the 5th starter slot comes up.
https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/nats-in-quandary-after-bullpen-taxed-vs-mets
Suggests that Jackson Tetreault would be the AAA option, while Evan Lee is on the 40 man roster and lined up in AA.  Mentions Rogers or Espino, but for Espino going 3 yesterday.  Tetreault would require a 40 man roster move.  I suppose technically, Stras could be put on the 60 day il since he's missed 60+ days already.  That would punt the decision on 40 man moves down the road. Tetreault has 3.35 ERA in 10 starts, 48.1 IP.

Not mentioned but another candidate who has started in the past and was not used on Monday is Erasmo Ramirez.

Worst rotation I can remember. It is Josiah Gray and nobody. I remember the 1954 team pretty well, and had most of the cards from 1953. I'll take Bob Porterfield and Walter Masterson from 1953, and Chuck Stobbs was OK even though that season he gave up Mickey Mantle's homerun that cleared the LF bleachers. The 1953 team had Connie Marrero, who taught generations of Cuban pitchers the curve ball: Camilo Pascual, Luis Tiant, right down to Livan Hernandez.

The first expansion team had miserable pitching, but a couple of those guys had once been good. Dick Donavan was terrific for the White Sox, and still pretty good. Just starting out, there were Claude Osteen and Tom Cheney.

Martinez says Long will likely stay up and get another start in 5 days.

I am surprised.  They can skip the 5th starter, so I figured he was up just for a game and then they'd bring up a reliever, probably Claytus the Slack-Jawed lefty.

Lee.

Yeah, just busting JCA's chops. Or maybe Kevin Long found himself a new career? :)

Why do the Nats have a pair of AA pitchers in the rotation? Adon skipped AAA and now Lee has as well.

Lee was on the 40 man roster, so they've already burned an option this year.  He was also on normal rest.  the AAA starter, Detrault, whose turn it was in the Rochester rotation and who had OK numbers, would have had to be added to the 40 man roster (meaning another player would need to be released) and would have burned an option when he was sent down to make room for Strasburg.

I don't think skipping AAA is totally uncommon. Certainly isn't here in DC. Usually due to injuries. I remember Difo was called up from AA after a spate of injuries.

I always thought of AAA as where you kept your journeyman, MLB capable guys who could fill in for injuries, etc.   And AA as the top level for the high end/high ceiling prospects.

It is for pitchers. Adon only got a rotation spot because Annibal and Ross were hurt. He clearly needs to be in Triple A

Used to happen a lot more often than it does. MLB teams used to do that all the time early part of the century. Past few years was also because the AAA team was in Fresno. They put guys they wanted easy access to in AA so they could get here more quickly.

there was a time when AA held the top prospects, and AAA was the major league replacement players IIRC.

FWIW, Strasburg did get time at AAA before getting called up.

Are they going with Lee or Adon tomorrow?  My guess is Lee as long as he's active, then Adon, then perhaps Stras on 6/9 or 6/10 if his bullpen goes well.  I could see this series basically being a pitch off between Lee and Adon for who stays.

I like Adon. And it might not be a bad idea for him to get a bit more AAA seasoning.

I would send him back to Harrisburg.
