so before the streak they were 47-41?  Wild that a > .500 team could fall apart like that.  There weren't too many major call ups, at least before 8/2.

As Gerardo Parra says, "That's baseball".

On July 19, 1959, the Nats were 43 - 46 as Washington beat Kansas City 7 - 0. Pascual pitched a 5-hit shutout, and Bob Allison hit his 24th home run ("deep to LF"...at Griffith Stadium, any home run to left was deep). The Senators lost the second game of the double-header, 6 - 5, and it started...

(A quick game-by-game: The Nats lost that game to the A's and then went on a 16-game road-trip, crawling home to face the Indians on August 4 at 20 games under .500.)

17-0 win tonight. Pineda with a heck of a debut: 2-3, 2B, HR, 5 RBIs

Adon with 5.1 shutout innings.

Maybe Adon is figuring it out.

Pineda is somebody who has to be on the 40 man roster after the season.  There's no way he would not get grabbed in Rule 5.  I know it's kind of rare for a catcher to stick year-round on a 26 man roster, but I can't see how this guy couldn't be a backup for a year, playing 1-2 times a week.  That bat has a decent chance at playing, and he's tough to run on.

I think he meant "is back" in terms of "he's pitching well again".  Abbott was the replacement for Cavalli in DC
