No, I like this thread. Chico will come around and has done well considering where we have put him and what we have him dealing with. We knew he would take his knocks. That is no secret or surprise. He got hammered a bit tonight but he is tough and doesn't complain. Just does his job to the best of his abilities.

That fat tub of lard you refer to was the ace of the Expos/Nationals franchise for the past 5 years prior to being dealt last season. Don't disrespect a guy that was a solid contributor to our team year in and year out. Comparing a proven pitcher like Livo to a rookie who has strung together a couple of decent starts is an insult.

I don't see why people here have animosity towards Livan. He was overweight, yes, but I liked the guy and he was pretty good for us here in DC in his short time.

He got to the point where he'd give up a handful of runs in the first 2 innings. He wasn't reliable.

Livan couldn't get anybody out in the 7th inning last night, but he'd given up 6 runs to Tampa Bay and lost, reducing his W-L record to 5-5. He has an ERA of 4.50, a WHIP of 1.57 and has 47 Ks, 44 walks (remember those?) - but he has a .257 batting average against other pitchers. He's getting paid $7 million in 2007. I think our whole pitching staff combined gets less...

Props to Matt Chico for his great outing tonight against one of the best offenses in baseball. He is going to be a solid #3-4 starter for us for years to come. If only we had a closer worth a damn..

Man, Chico was awesome today, at least I was able to follow it for a bit and it was 1-0 Nats when I had to leave... Matt keeps getting better. Good sign for the Nats future.

Heard part of the postgame press conference on the radio and Manny said when the Nats scored the runs Chico smelled blood and went after the hitters. I don't have my scorecard handy but I think he allowed just 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and no walks in 7 innings (and 1 wild pitch, I think?)

I had to listen to the game on XM since I'm out of town...sounded (literally) like the game of the year, in terms of players coming up clutch and a green pitcher making a statement. Dee-lish.

ON the thing about Livo being mentioned in the thred. I feel bad for the insult thrown in his direction in this thread, but then again baseball is a show-me-now/what-have-you-done-for-me-lately game. I rememebr Livan back in 05. He was a ce that year. 15 wins i think he had, and he eas an ining eater. If i could have back one pitcher in teh Nationals era at their peak itwould be the 05 Livan. Sadly tho when he departed fromt he Nats he wasn't playin his best baseball, and i gues thats what ppl will rememrb him for kinda like even tho JP has potential and showed it in 05 if he left the Nats org. today he would be rememrbered for being an pitching version of Escobar.

I'd take '05 Patterson over '05 Livan ANY DAY.

I was just joking about Livan, though, really. I do think, however, that he's incredibly average and on the decline, and I feel much better about our organization's future with Chico and Mock than I would with Livo.

He kicked ass in I think one and only one start with Potomac. Unfortunately, he's been battling injuries all year. I think he'll be money if and when he gets healthy, but he seems like a part of a long list of really talented guys who can't stay off the DL in this organization.

I've always tried to like Chico more than just because he is on the team, but he really is just OK. He's young, yes, but his stuff just isn't that great. His arm is weak and he serves pitches. I truly hope he's at best a spot starter next season. We need to do better than him if we can.

He's also accomplished a feat no other pitcher this year has: stayed healthy and in the rotation for every start all year, and earning his keep along the way. He's earned his spot solely based on that.
