Could someone explain the rationale for letting DSG go and keeping Escobar? If I understand Escobar will be brought back to the active roster when the Nats have to dump a pitcher.

Rizzo still lives in a fantasy land where Escobar is a "good defender" and "good hitter"

Escobar is on a rehab assignment in Rochester, so no need to release him yet. There's no room for him though on the active roster with Adrianza as the primary IF backup, so I assume once his rehab assignment ends, he's released and that they are just hanging onto him now in case an IF gets hurt.

DSG cleared waivers and refused assignment to Rochester, so they released him. There's no room for him either with Adrianza, Garcia now at SS, and four outfielders.

they needed to get someone off the active roster to bring up Tetrault.  Escobar is not on the active roster.  Designating DSG also opened up the 40 man roster slot for Tetrault, too.
They could have released Escobar to open up the 40 man roster spot, but they still would have had to clear space on the active roster (26 man) to add Tetrault.  That would have meant sending down a guy with options DSG, (basically Yadi) or releasing DSG.

You can’t release a player on the IR.

right.  Not only useless to cut him at the time instead of DSG, but contrary to the player agreement.  Like Paul Masson wines, we will cut no useless player before his time.  Esobar survives until he's healthy enough to be culled from the herd.

James Norwood DFA'd by the Phillies. Nats should grab him
signed by the Red Sox and placed in their rotation.  Horrible ERA, but acceptable advanced stats.  Victim of bad D, but not prone to gopher balls.

Quote
With the new limit of 13 pitchers, the Red Sox called up infield prospect Jeter Downs from Triple-A Worcester and designated right-hander James Norwood for assignment. The Red Sox acquired Norwood for cash from the Phillies on Saturday, but he didn’t get into a game.

I count 14 active pitchers, so there's a roster move coming today.

I'd imagine one of Abbott, Garrett, Machado, Perez are the likelies.

I'm guessing the rest of the staff looks like:

Corbin, Fedde, Gray, Espino, Tetreault in the rotation;
Rainey closer
Edwards, Cishek and Finnegan setup.
Erasmo middle innings and behind.

Machado seems like an easy DFA candidate.

I would think that they'd option a guy before a dfa, if they can.

Escobar activated, Corey Abbott sent to Rochester (max of 13 pitchers starts today).

Nats sign John Nogowski to a minor league deal - Apparently he's a first baseman, and a pitcher.

Assigned to Harrisburg, MBLTR speculates he's backfill for Noll or Meneses after Bell is traded.

if you just look at their effectiveness, can you tell them apart?

What's the difference between a lefty pitching machine and a lefty pitching machine?

Forum doesn't seem too active lately even tho it's been more than a year since I've checked in. Caught my first game in three years down here in Dallas this weekend.

Go Nats.

yes.  We're running about 1/3 off from last year in terms of posts.  Glad you were able to show the colors vs. the Rangers.  I hope they rewarded you with a win.

The team’s win/loss record for the last year or so has something to do with it.

my guess is we'll be around 30,000 posts this year, vs. 250,000 in 2012.  We were still over 100,000 in 2019, then bumped down to 45,000 the past two years.

My fault...I didn't check the schedule to see that today was a getaway day game!

Claytus interruptus.  Mason Thompson activated.

Also, Barrera up, Adams down. Get some steady appearances in Rochester.

This makes sense. Adams needs to play regularly.

Mason Thompson was not a walloping success last season, but maybe...

at least he throws hard. If it works, then there's one other marginal arm that gets overworked

I'm just spitballing here, but I bet Adams gets regular reps at 1B.
