Cesar Hernandez had a couple hits last night but looks completely uninterested and checked out. Play at the plate last night shouldn’t have been close. DFA when Abrams comes up.

Alex Call has been called up.

Where does he play? Robles is going to be CF. Lane Thomas should be playing every day until the end of this season. Meneses is too hot to bench. Voit should probably be playing every day.

They could bench the 42 year old DH and shift Voit there, Meneses to 1B, and open a corner spot. But they won't.

Why should Thomas be playing? He's a AAAA player/fourth outfielder who turns 27 next week, can only sorta play center, and doesn't hit enough to play every day in the corners.  What is the team supposed to be learning about him by playing him every day?

While I agree with you on Thomas, I would much rather see him in the lineup every day than have Cruz eat up a roster spot. It's ridiculous to have him up and not let a guy like Palacios see some playing time.

That's 100% true.

The Washington Nationals are calling up top prospect C.J. Abrams, one of the main returns in the Juan Soto trade, sources tell ESPN.

Abrams, a 21-year-old shortstop, debuted with the Padres earlier this year. Infielder Luis García is headed to the IL to make room on the roster.

What prospect is joining the Nationals? The Nationals, according to sources, are calling up C.J. Abrams, the shortstop acquired in the Soto trade. Abrams hit .232 in 46 games with the Padres this season but was initially optioned to Class AAA Rochester upon joining Washington’s organization.

Abrams will fill the spot of Luis García, who didn’t play for the second straight day after hurting his groin Friday. García said after Sunday’s game that he felt better but still experiences pain when he runs.

Once Garcia is back just release Cesar.  Maybe some contender will want him as a backup. And Franco. Just no point to this.

Barrera optioned to Rochester. No corresponding move but likely means Adams is back

Does he have three options left?

Release Franco. Vargas can't hit, but he can field. Cesar H. seems useful...maybe the Nats keep him as a backup 2B. Otherwise, who's on second?

Barrera?  No chance.  He's burned at least two - this year and last. Should have one more for next year if he stays.

they aren't using the 40 man roster spot.  Excluding 60 day IL guys, I count 21 pitchers, 3 catchers, 9 infielders, 5 outfielders, and 1 DH.  That's 39.  That makes me think the DFA has to be something Clippard wanted.  I could see him offered to a contender who is looking for bullpen help down the stretch in exchange for a minor leaguer who we are interested in but needs to be added to the 40 man roster this off season.

Edit - stupid point deleted.  Clip was on the 25 man, so the Fedde reinstatement meant somebody had to go, thus the DFA. Also, no waiver trades after 8/2.  Truly a bad point on my part.

why would any contender want a 37 year old pitcher who posted a 7.20 ERA and a 2.000 WHIP in 4 appearances since getting called up?

He had 4 decent appearances in AAA before he shut it down after 8/9. up to that point, I think he was heading for being called up or dealt.  Maybe he's calling it quits. I think there'd be a market otherwise based on his complete season rather than 2 outings where he gave up runs.
