When are we going to get #15 Matt Adams back? He seems to be available. 😉

I'm hoping he can build on his first few games this season. Looked good. I liked this reclamation project from the start.

Somehow this falls into the category of "eh, the alternatives might actually be worse."

Still love that Rizzo went into this season with his #3 and #4 starters as Erik Fedde and Anibal Sanchez.

Couldn't that have happened after Rainey was traded?  :hang:

this is like in The Natural, when Redford's character finally gets his chance when one of the outfielders kills himself running through a wall.  This is a lousy way for Clippard to be added back to the roster. Let's hope this doesn't set Rainey back too much.

Does this suggest that Rainey will need Tommy John surgery?

decent likelihood.  maybe tries platelet-rich plasma treatment or just rest, depending on how bad the sprain is.  Just a guess on the timing of surgery, if any: most of 2023 would be in jeopardy if he underwent TJS, so they likely will try to let it heal first and hold off surgery.

I'm wondering if it was from over use especially since his last appearance was 2 innings.

Could be. But most of the time it’s just because he’s a pitcher.

technically not a roster move, DSG was signed to a minor league contract.

Ildemaro Vargas selected from Rochester. Looks considerably worse than Adrianza

a 31 year old utility guy who has played every OF and IF position but is primarily a second baseman, I guess.  A few cups of coffee drifting through a  bunch of teams systems, including the Cubs this year.  TBH, I would have expected DSG, unless they anticipate cutting this guy as soon as other deals are done.

What is the baseball reasoning for having him up over Lucius Fox? Neither can consistently hit. But Fox is younger, has years of team control, and can be a fine defender up the middle.

It won't matter much in results. But I'd prefer to see a younger guy than an older one when not much difference.

Good question. If there's any difference between the two, it may be that Fox has already been in a Nats uniform this season and proved not only that he cannot hit consistently, but that he couldn't hit a watermelon if you lobbed it across the plate to him from 3 feet away. Now it's Vargas' turn to distinguish himself. Or not. Probably not.

Is Alcides Escobar still on the roster?  Hasn't it been weeks since he appeared in a game?

he is.  he's appeared once since 7/10 (on 7/16).

Vargas has a more interesting name.  Seriously, perhaps they want Fox to get regular playing time?

That's absurd.  Rule 5 guys get more run than that.  Just DFA the dude and bring up someone who could potentially contribute in some way.  Any way.  Like even bring back Fox purely as a pinch runner.

Why, though?  He's in his seventh year of pro ball and has never hit above high-A.  He runs fast and can play SS.  Neither of those is worthless.  But he's not mysteriously going to learn to hit AAA pitching in his third season there.
