Broke it doing something unrelated to baseball in the offseason.   And he's just now getting surgery?   That's probably not going to go over well with the team and fans.

https://sports.yahoo.com/gerrit-cole-calls-yankees-delay-for-billy-crystal-first-pitch-a-challenge-after-rough-start-030051772.html

Gerritt Cole is such an jerk.

How is this Crystal first pitch a problem? It looked quick https://twitter.com/YESNetwork/status/1512478648997224450

I give teams credit they're usually spot on at start time. Bob Carpenter is good at pointing out it is weird when a Nationals game has a first pitch even one minute late. But it's opening day. Get over yourself, Cole.

Orioles home opener is a sell-out, and most of the fans in the stands appear to actually be O's fans (any guesses on what percentage of the attendance in the Nats series were Mets fans?).

Birds win 2-0. I imagine they are still on pace for another bad season, nevertheless.

It was a very solid Nats showing for the opener, pleasantly so

Got pulled after 7 while still perfect and at only 80 pitches.

I mean, it's early, but I dunno about the wisdom of this.

Fangraphs dove deep:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/imperfect-circumstances-foiled-clayton-kershaws-perfect-game/

They noted that it was very cold, wind chill of 28 degrees. Kershaw allowed just one hard hit ball and only 8 were put into play. Kershaw's velocity was already falling and he had only planned on going about 80 pitches.

Given the abbreviated ST and his past injury issues, they made the right call IMHO.  Fangraphs noted no pitcher has gone beyond 7 innings this season.

Stat shmat. He gets hurt every year anyway, he's already got his World Series ring-let him get a chance at perfection to cap off his career.

Joe Maddon just walked Corey Seager with the bases loaded to get to Marcus Garver who hit a sac fly to score a run.

Orioles beat the Yankees in the 11th on a walk-off walk.

Aaron Boone was not happy, probably with good reason, as at least two of Chapman's pitches which were called balls were right on the line on the pitch track box.

Wonder how soon he will need arm surgery.

within 3 years.  He's been at this level all of his career, including the minors.  I think he had an inning at the 2018 futures game where he was in the 100s

He's already had Tommy John.  He's also an enormous human being, so he might be a little less likely to break down under big forces.  Seeing that crap against AA hitters was entertaining.

I just don’t recall a starter throwing consistently that hard except Nolan Ryan. Maybe Randy Johnson also. We shall see as they say.

can't wait for Franco, Thomas, Escobar, and Robles to face him? Watching Cruz try to catch up could be painful.

We shall.  It's mostly wishful thinking for me to hope he doesn't get hurt again.  Seeing him in person last year was fun.  Nice dude too.

Red Sox having a lot of COVID problems.  Originally, Plawecki and two non-field staffers test positive. Now Vazquez and Arauz have tested positive. They called up conor wong, who they got in the Mookie deal, and Roberto Hernandez, a catcher the got from the Rays at the start of last season.  On top of that, next week they play in Toronto, and several of their players cannot travel to Canada because they are unvaxxed, including Tanner Houck.
