Davey says Strasburg is not yet facing live hitters but there are no setbacks.

I'll take the under on 50 innings this year.

stinks big time.  HE looked good this year.  At a minimum, he could have been traded at the deadline.  Elbow damage to an old guy is not good. A sprain to the pitching elbow is vague enough that it encompasses pull the plug on the career scenarios. Best we can hope for is a rest and rehab fix for it that doesn't go on too long.

Bell being pulled last night worries me.

This things falls apart if he has even a short DL stint.

if he can't play, then I think you see you man Noll.  It's possible you see Garcia, with Escobar at 3rd and Franco at 1st.

I'd rather bring up Barrera and give Adams some run at 1B.

I'd like that a lot. Barrera is hitting in Rochester and is a fine backup catcher. Let Adams get a week of consistent ABs and see what happen.

I like Noll as an older prospect. Want him to get some burn this season. But Adams has a higher ceiling. We need to figure out if he is a backup catcher with pop or a guy who needs to be give more ABs.

Someone made, maybe on Zuckerman's postgame podcast, that the best pitching performances lately have been with Adams behind the plate. So do with that what you will...

Ruiz is scuffling right now, but his bat is a safe bet to someday be one you want in the lineup even on his off days. But I don't think they want him putting any focus at 1B an DH is blocked by Cruz.

You absolutely have to find out if Ruiz will be a hit as a catcher. If he is, that's a huge win. If now, there are options, because I think the bat is going to be a big plus. If Adams and Ruiz can both hit at this level and can be long-ish term answers at C/1B/DH, that'd be a big help filling holes at other places.

He hit the ball hard every time up yesterday.  In some places that would have been 3-4 with a homer and a double.  He definitely looks like the bat will be fine.

I'm curious too about the discrepancy behind the plate, but there's an easy solution: keep playing them both.  I'd also be happy with either one getting time at 1B while Bell's out, just for at bats.  Might also be smart to give Barrera one turn with each starter just because he's a bit more of a known quantity behind the plate and can provide a benchmark.  Two rookie catchers at once is a tough situation in some ways.

The team is 6-8 with a not brutal schedule coming up. No reason we can't hang around .500 for the next couple weeks. I thought this season would be over by mid-May. It doesn't have to be. Bell going out of the lineup could make it difficult to stay competitive.

I want to have a fun team this spring and for the team to have to honestly questions the Buy/Sell question at the deadline. It's not fun for the season to be over at the beginning, like it has been in Baltimore recently.

As for Adams at first, I don't know if they are comfortable yet with his play or how often he has worked there.

If Bell is out, I bet Franco is the everyday 1B with Fox getting burn at 3B. Which I don't mind.

I just don't want them to panickily sign or trade for a middling veteran to come in and patch the position for a couple weeks. Give these younger guys some burn and figure out who may be a key backup versus a forever AAAA taxi squad member.

Isn't a "Mikael Franco" a much shorter way of typing "a middling veteran to come in and patch the position for a couple weeks," or am I missing something?

As for Fox, I'm not sure it's worth the time except to confirm that he can't hit.  He's never hit in the minors, so that doesn't seem to be much in doubt.  The only question is whether he can play SS well enough to justify a roster spot given that he can't hit.  Sticking him at 3B doesn't serve that.  If he and Escobar both are going to play, I'd rather Fox play SS - it at least provides information.

Franco has held things down admirably at third. I'd prefer to leave him there. I don't think Fox getting regular starts is a great solution.

On the first line, quest. I would have preferred Fox, Urena, or Garcia starting day one. Franco has been better than expected and I'm glad he is out there, but you're right he is the type of guy I don't want brought in at this point.

On Fox, I expect the bat just isn't there for a bench spot in the long term. But if he plays competent defense and can stay north of the Mendoza line, he is a young, cost controlled player you can keep around for a while so you don't have to go and grab guys like Escobar and Franco.

Hunter Harvey to the IL with a pronator strain. Harvey and Doolittle seemed like bright spots who if they pitched well could bring back something interesting. Now both have somewhat troubling arm/elbow issues.

Josh Bell need an DL stint.

Interested to see what they do with lineup. I’d like to see Barrera called up and everyday have either Fox at 3B or Adams at 1B.
