If Ross throws another quality start in a Nats uniform I will be shocked. He'll eventually make it back, the local writers will treat it like a big deal, and he'll struggle to a 5-6 ERA before being cut.

Could’ve gotten a decent return for him at last years deadline….

Will at least keep his era low…

he hasn't allowed an earned run in since August 20. That's a pretty impressive stretch. :)

Who had an ERA of Infinity a few years ago after a bunch of appearances?  He finally recorded an out and his ERA dropped to 275.00 or something.  I think I blocked 🚫  it out.

Flexor mass strain for Kieboom. Will undergo more tests. Best case he’s back in a few weeks. Worst case he’ll need surgery.

Our backup plan is Franco. Kieboom returning is sadly the best case.

Franco is the definition of replacement level. Kieboom can only aspire to that.

Zuck noted this morning that Kieboom > Franco in terms of WAR and OPS last year.

SSS.  Give Kieboom a chance to catch up. Or down.

Look at previous seasons. Kieboom has never been a major leaguer. Franco was a regular 3B with the Phillies for four seasons. That's not much, but he has been better than Kieboom.

Low bar versus no bar.  If Kieboom had as many a bats last year as Franco his WAR would have been as low.  Or lower.  They are both negative but Franco is on the down path and Kieboom is supposed to be a prime prospect.

That and the fact that this team isn't expected to do much should give Kieboom the first shot when healthy, but the first-round pedigree starts to fall away when you were a HS draftee and you're turning 25 during the season.

This is Kieboom's seventh professional season.  Very few non-catcher position players get seven years in the same system without proving they have at least some useful MLB-level skill - that's what being drafted high will get you.  But at some point you have to put up or shut up.

The Nats haven't had too many HS draftees stick recently.  But let's compare one that's pretty instructive: MAT.  Drafted in the sixth round as an SS; changed positions, made it to the majors and played there a full season in his sixth professional season.  Didn't hit much but proved his glove/arm/power combo was enough to be at least 4th OF-useful.  His seventh season and onward were mostly more of the same.  Kieboom is well behind that curve now.

On Kieboom, Shirley Povich said it all about 1936: "Bobby Burke, who had a ten-year tryout with the Nats, was released today..."

(Burke threw the Old Senators' only no-hitter, in 1931. Like Kieboom's having been a first round draft choice, that was enough for the Nats to keep trying him.)

Most of the first rounders drafted out of high school in the 2016 draft are still with their teams.

Pretty normal for first round high schoolers to stay with the organization who drafted them for a while

is a flexor mass strain a fancy way of saying a tear in the elbow?
