Casey is a AA outfielder, hitting .213 in AAA at age 26. Carillo is still hurt. Gray and Ruiz are pretty good major leaguers, but that's all the Nats got in the trade.

In the other flippage, the Nats got Riley Adams and several nobodies.
You forgot Lane Thomas. Four major leaguers already is not a bad haul for guys who were two month rentals. (Except Turner). And four guys under team control for a while.

Schwarber would have gotten more but was injured. Not sure about the prospect we got for him or those in the Hudson trade. This year will not bring much except maybe Bell? Teams just aren’t trading away good prospects like they used to.

I keep forgetting that Lester pitched for the Nats. Getting Thomas is almost like asking the Cardinals to give away a prospect for free and the Cardinals saying "yes". That trade was like George Preston Marshall offering M.C. Reynolds to the Browns for Bobby Mitchell. GPM was under pressure to integrate his Redskins, so he proclaimed that Paul Brown was keeping the Redskins all-white by turning down the trade. Reynolds was the Redskins' third-string QB. Shirley Povich had a merry time ridiculing Marshall for asking the Browns to give him a big star for nobody.

The Lester-for-Thomas trade was almost as if Paul Brown had said "yes". Although Lane Thomas is not, and probably will never be, an all-star, that trade was a plain give-away.

For the others:

- Schwarber for Aldo Ramirez, who started two games for the Nats Florida league last year, then broke down. Hasn't pitched this season.

- Yan Gomes and Josh Harrison to Oakland for Richard Guasch, Drew Millas, and Seth Shuman. Guasch is a starter for Harrisburg, where he has a 6.63 ERA (2 - 7); Millas is hitting .210 for Wilmington and Harrisburg -- he is a maybe; Shuman has started and thrown 33 innings for Wilmington with a 2,41 ERA, so Shuman is not hopeless.

- Daniel Hudson for Mason Thompson and Jordy Barley. Thompson was a no-big-deal reliever last season, is out with an injury; Barley is hitting .160 for Wilmington.

Thanks for the update. Thomas was a good get. Surprisingly Lester was great for the Cards and helped them make the playoffs. So they got what they wanted also. Lester knew he couldn’t do it for a full season so retired.

Angels: 3B Anthony Rendon (wrist), eligible to come off the injured list, fielded grounders before batting practice but there is no timetable for his return.

MAT hitting .255 for KC. Jeff Ebert writes on Facebook:

Quote
Washington D.C. Baseball - Yesterday & Today

Jeff Ebert  ·

  ·
Yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the K.C. Royals 8-0, behind starter Ross Stripling (5 innings) and 4 relievers (1 inning apiece). In total, the 5 pitchers allowed a mere 2 hits and 1 walk, facing just 3 batters over the minimum.

I'd be inclined to ask why a Toronto blowout vs K.C. on a Monday in June, when our Nats had the day off, might be of interest. Well, remarkably, the only Royal keeping Blue Jays pitchers from perfection was Michael A. Taylor, who seemingly was a fan favorite here. In his 7 years as a Nat, he had a .237 BA and hardly the patience to draw many walks.

But on Monday, he was the full extent of the Royals offense. He singled to left-center in the 3rd, drew a leadoff walk in the 6th, and singled to right in the 8th, reaching 2nd base on an error by the rightfielder. It’s little wonder why the Royals were so dismal; by game’s end, Taylor’s .255 BA was eclipsed only by a .257 and a .265 BA in their starting lineup. And our Nats’ .375 winning pct looks lofty compared to their .321.

Well, at least he won't have to move if he doesn't want to.

Austin Voth claimed by Baltimore.

Voth and Matt Harvey, after Harvey finishes his 60 game suspension: imagine them on the same Baltimore AAA team!

Former Nats great Mike Ford is making progress on his goal of playing for every team this year. He is now with Atlanta having previously been with Seattle (twice) and San Francisco.

Rendon left the game hurt again last night after only being back for a few days.   He's giving the Strasburg contract a good run for worst contract.

Don’t forget Corbin. If he could get hurt it might actually improve things.

So basically half of MLB payroll is tied up on a few players recuperating in hot tubs.  Seems like a pretty good business model!

The Corbin contract won us a world series.   It's a lot easier to accept dead years in the back end when the contract leads to winning something.

Well the prior Strasburg contract won us a World Series for sure. Just focus on that one.

On the bright side, Will Harris will be on this list next year, freeing $8 million in dead money.

The list of good rizzo moves vs. bad rizzo moves since 2019 is comically one-sided. it's not really all on him of course (harris freak injury, corbin total pumpkin, stras total pumpkin, COVID, etc.) but pretty funny. Harris got $30 million to pitch like 4 games.

He pitched 23 2/3 innings - almost as much as Strasburg has in that time.  $30 million is a bargain.

Also, for those who think Strasburg's coming back from TOS in any useful form, Harris had exactly the same issue.

Rendon wrist surgery story.

4 more years left on that contract. Can we swap him for Corbin?
