Bryce is at .071 after an 0-3 with 3 Ks.

I suppose we really are still well and truly in small-sample-size territory. I try not to pay attention to stats until about 20 games or so.

Add to that a shortened spring training and I suppose many players are still not in regular-season form yet. Though that applies to pitchers as well, so maybe it should balance out.

watch them fix him.  HE had a few impressive outings but something fell apart.

Rendon for Corbin.  Do it Rizzo!
I'm not sure I'd do that.   Letting Rendon move on is looking like a very wise move so far.   He turns 32 in a month, looks like he is breaking down, and is owed a whole lot more money than Corbin is.

Signing Rendon to a huge deal was defensible under assumption he would crush it first few years and you'd eat the end of the contract.

He did that in 2020. 2021 was rough. If 2022 is rough, I think it is hard to see him living up to the contract. But I won't close book on him having an insane season unless he is scrapping around the ASB. He has had slow starts that lasted weeks before going on ultra hot runs.

I still think he's dropped from the short list of best 3rd basemen but can recover.  That's a come down from a top 6 ballplayer that he was by WAR for several years ending in 2020 (the article on the Angels site kind of misses he was 6th overall in fWAR in 2020).  Devers, Arenado, Machado, and Jose Ramirez are the short list at the position, maybe Moncada and Chapman, with Riley needing another year to belong and Rendon needing a year to recover.  I think his AAV is probably about $5 million a year too rich. He's owed 4 years, $152 million ($38MM a year) for his last 4 years. Losing 2 years of Corbin's money ($59 million) would lower the net to  $93 million, or $23 million per year. If he has anything close to a 4 fWAR year this year, which is in the range of some of his projections, then I'd go for it.

Steven Souza claims more than half the league steals signs and the Astros got scapegoated.

Steven Souza claims more than half the league steals signs

They reportedly institutionalized real-time, pitch-by-pitch electronic sign stealing, evidently included the entire lineup as well as reportedly having coaches and management involved. They reportedly did this multiple times in ways that have been specifically documented, occurring in a year that they won their only title and had home-field advantage for two game sevens (granted, it was only the ALCS that the Astros got home-field advantage based on the record).

And the issues reportedly weren’t isolated to 2017, given the “code breaker/dark arts” revelations and so forth. Here’s this from 2018, after an Astros employee was reportedly taping things in the dugouts of Cleveland and Boston:

https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-red-sox-warned-indians-astros-attempting-steal-signs-information-032027336.html

“This is not the first investigation into the Astros’ attempts to gain competitive advantages this season, three sources told Yahoo Sports. During a late-August game against Oakland, A’s players noticed Astros players clapping in the dugout before pitches and believed they were relaying stolen signs to pitchers in the batter’s box, sources said. The A’s called the league, which said it would investigate the matter. It’s unclear what the result of the investigation was or whether it remains ongoing.“

“Teams around the league are perhaps more wary of the Astros than any team, fearful that their employment of cameras – they use high-speed models made by Edgertronic to help evaluate players, according to sources – allows them to steal signs.“

Additionally, in connection with the Red Sox Apple Watch violations, the commissioner specified the following in September 2017:

https://www.mlb.com/press-release/commissioner-s-statement-regarding-red-sox-yankees-violations-254435818

“Moreover, all 30 Clubs have been notified that future violations of this type will be subject to more serious sanctions, including the possible loss of draft picks.”

All this as well as the best interest of baseball clothes appear to have given him the latitude to do things like vacate the title connecting commensurate with Black Sox-level rules violations, including what reportedly happened in 2018 with the Astros despite this warning. I would hardly say that the Astros are being unfairly singled out given the abundance of evidence, the scope of the violations, and the persistence in doing so reportedly well after being warned by the commissioner’s office.

This isn’t even getting into all of the focus their management garnered surrounding the whole Osuna incident; perhaps people will start opining that they were unfairly singled out there too as well on a “most everyone does this“ basis.

Miami appears to have fixed him.

One start and five innings is the smallest of sample sizes. I always had high hopes for him and I hope he is fixed (although it sucks he is in division again) but this is WAY to early to call.

I remember like three years ago thinking our system was loaded with backstop talent. And like every guy somehow underperformed the lowest expectation.

Toss in Reetz and yes.

Barrera is best of the bunch and he is a really competent backup catcher who can start for stretches if needed.

Honestly, they need to figure out if both Ruiz and Adams can catch.  If so, they should trade Barrera.  He won't fetch a lot, but it'd clear a space on the 40 and get something back.  It's stupid for a team this bad to have a legitimate major league player (even if just a backup) in the minors.

So Barrera should be backing up Ruiz and playing the day game after the night game and 1 other start, while Adams gets the bulk of the starts in Aaa?
