Just turned on right after it happened.  They just need to call the game and send everyone home. Hope he is OK.

Last update was that he had a pulse but wasn’t breathing on his own. Yeah. Suspend the game

I remember when Chuck Hughes died. But that was not on national TV.

Intubated and in critical condition. Hopefully making it to the hospital alive is a good sign

I didn't know much about Damar Hamlin until tonight but Twitter has taught me some things. He got offers from multiple elite college football programs but chose Pitt because he wanted to give people in his native Pittsburgh something to be proud of. He organized toy drives for kids in poor parts of Pittsburgh - he started doing that as an unpaid college player.

Here is a picture of him giving a toy to a kid in 2020:

This happened to one of the nicest guys on the field.

last update from his agent is that his vital signs are normal and that they are going to try to wean him off the breathing tube tomorrow. Fingers crossed that he comes out of this OK.

His toy drive had raised about $18k before tonight, it's now well over $1 million.

EDIT: CPR and defibrillators saves lives, and it’s easy to learn. cpr.heart.org  bhf.org.uk

Trauma doc here, hopefully I can help add some context here.

Whenever you see young sportsman drop like that, the assumption is an arrhythmia, either spontaneous (think Christian Eriksen and Fabrice Muamba), or, given the likely contact to the chest immediately preceding, a very rare phenomenon known as commmotio cordis, where the electrical activity induced in the heart from the impact, opposes the normal electrical activity maintaining rhythm. Either way the heart muscle becomes uncoordinated, and ineffective at pumping blood.

The immediate treatment for this is CPR, until defibrillation to restore a coordinated, and effective heart rhythm. This is one of the few scenarios where CPR is very effective.

Looking at the outcomes from previous events, Eriksen is playing top flight soccer again after a short stay in hospital and an implanted defibrillator. Muamba was hospitalised for about a month, he retired, but otherwise lives a normal life with an implanted defibrillator.

I’m seeing a few people concerned by the suggestion that CPR was performed for 9 minutes. The threshold for stopping CPR once you’ve started is very high, and in that particularly chaotic environment, the default is too continue until you’re absolutely sure he’s supporting his own circulation. Consider the time to recognise the situation, undress the player, get the AED and set it up, deliver a few shocks, and be certain his circulation is stable, 9 minutes is pretty quick. For context it was widely reported that Muamba’s heart was stopped (or more accurately had that arrhythmia) for 78 minutes - and he walked out of hospital.

What can the NFL do about this? Nothing to prevent it, and on the surface the medical response appears excellent, but that will be better examined after the fact. I don’t believe, at this point, that this incident is indicative of the wider conversation around player safety.

Be skeptical about any medical information being posted on twitter etc. The guys who are looking after him won’t be leaking, and medical information is often misinterpreted when passed down a game of journalist telephone.

My thoughts turned to a couple of incidents in Boston sports.  Each of the major sports teams there have had tragedies / near tragedies during games.  This instantly reminded me of Reggie Lewis's collapse during a game, from which he started to come back but later had his fatal incident at a practice.  I think the level of cardiac support at professional sports is now much greater due in part to the Lewis incident.  We can hope that Hamlin had sufficient timely support and gets through this on a good track.

NFL network’s Mike garafolo says demar is communicating via writing and asked if the Bills won. Next step is getting him off the breathing tube and then sending him home. Incredible.

Hats off to the first responders and the medical professionals at that hospital.  Amazing what they can do.
Was reading that they are likely to just have that game as a push and not try again no matter the playoff implications.

If they had it after the regular season, who would even play? I'd think both teams would be better off just resting everyone

There's some talk about expanding the playoffs as well to add an extra WC team. This would mean that KC doesn't get a first round bye.

Some are also suggesting that the medical crew be introduced at the start of the next Bills game. That's a fantastic idea.

The Chiefs could show real class by waiving any bye, and home field advantage, regardless of Saturday's result. That would be the simplest solution, without lots of post-season jiggery-pokery... ;)
