LA tied it up late despite being down a man. Then the Union missed their first three penalty kicks. That might be a first.

Interesting.  For what it's worth, Henry has been viewed as a backing away from spending on the Red Sox over recent years.  Boston fans have said his primary attention has been on Liverpool.  The Red Sox have lost a bit of talent (Betts, Bogaerts, Benintendi as the headliners, with Devers likely to go as well).  They brought in a "moneyball" guy in Chaim Bloom out of Tampa Bay, but are not playing it like they did under Theo or how the LAD under Friedman play it (spend wisely but spend).  I guess the latter approach has been closer to what they've done at Liverpool.

I guess it might make sense to pocket the 4 billion Euros / pounds and redeploy the assets to the NHL Penguins, other european football assets, and the Red Sox.  Henry was mainly a hedge fund guy, and I don't know if he needs capital for that. I don't think hedge funds are as big a thing for him now with the success of his sports properties.

One other thing about the Liverpool investment: ostensibly, he was convinced to do it by a member of the Red Sox organization whose favorite club was Liverpool.  He asked Henry to look them over during the Tom Hicks debacle to rescue them.  I guess the 300 million pounds was the distressed price at the time.  The renovation approach to Anfield is exactly how they handled Fenway.

Looking ahead to next week, I believe there's some sort of sporting event taking place...

Only kidding. On a more serious note, what policy are we following for live games? As ever, game-times have been set to maximise the largest, and most profitable, audience - Europe. However, during the Group stage, Team USA games seem reasonably enough timed for the US market (19:00 GMT / 14:00 ET), so those not at work could (I assume) watch. I wouldn't want to spoil games for anyone, however, (if that would be the case) by live posting, so what should we do?

Not wishing to pre-empt, but I assume Team USA fans here will want to live post during the England game.... ;)

how's this: We start a GDT for the World Cup games.  Folks can live post.  Anyone wanting to not find out about a game can avoid that thread.  We can let folks post here but not mention group standings or game comments for 3 hours after a game?

I also have a hunch that the hard core will be taking time off from work to watch.  The first week is timed for Thanksgiving week in the USA, so those who work may be taking some of that time off.  I know I'll watch the first USA game live.

Edit:  World Cup GDT : https://www.wnff.net/index.php?topic=40456.0

For those of you who don't major on soccer, here's a useful piece on why holding the World Cup in Qatar is so controversial...

Is he no longer at a level where he should be able to play in one of the top 5 European leagues?  Is it particular to Man U's direction or are his skills coming up short?  MLS is a nice way to postpone retirement for a year or two, but unless you have some branding to do in the US, can the money be enough for a guy who still is useful at a high level (he says after Bale just led Wales to a draw against our best).

He’s 37. If the options are star in the MLS or play for a team fighting relegation, the MLS may be the better bet

Given his penchant for tearing off his shirt and huffing and puffing like tarzan, reuniting with Becks in Miami seems like an obvious fit.

Rough start for France. Give up a goal and lose a player. That injury did not look good.

Good start for the Socceroos, but then France just became irresistable - Mbappe and Griezmann sublime. How did Mbappe miss?....Despite coming close, with the header, Australia lost their way as the half went on - hopefully the break will give them time to regroup. In terms of the game, as a spectacle, we have to hope that Les Bleus don't return to type, and take their foot off the gas.

Giroud now only one goal behind Henry for the all-time France goalscoring record...

They could have had 10 goals.

I believe so.

There are some Carabao Cup games today and tomorrow involving those teams.  I believe that used to be the FA Cup?  In any event it’s soccer. Or is it futbol?
